					Political Boss Project
                   His Story
I once knew a political boss named Mr. Wiggins who
ruled the city of Chicago. He was linked to the
democratic party or what we call the political machine of
the city. His job as ward leader was to make sure that
the democratic candidate Mr. McMeans got elected.
                 His duties
Each day Mr. Wiggins would go through the
neighborhood doing good things for the poor immigrants
of the neighborhood. Then on election day he would
expect those he helped to vote for his candidate Mr.
McMeans. In exchange for all those votes, Mr.
McMeans would give city jobs to the friends of Mr.
Wiggins.
             End of Mr.Wiggins
Then one day the Pendleton Act was passed by Congress. This set
up the Civil Service Commission which set up competitive exams for
city jobs. Mr. Wiggins was no longer able to offer jobs to his political
supporters. That same year a woman named Jane Addams opened
a settlement house in the city and immigrants were now able to get
help from Ms. Addams. This led to the downfall of Mr. Wiggins as
his power dwindled and he lost control of the city.
