SUMMARY:
Performs general police work in the protection of life and property, including conducting
investigations of reported crimes and narcotic violations, responding to emergencies,
and conducting public education programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties will include but not be limited to the following:

    Enforce local, state and federal laws, prevent and suppress crime and accidents,
     and promote public safety.

    Patrol areas of Belle Fourche, answer calls in emergency and non-emergency
     situations, and initiate action on matters coming to the attention of the officer,
     including preparing citations.

    Perform assigned police duties such as investigate traffic accidents, responding
     to emergency situations, family disturbances, public disorders, and crimes.

    Serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas, testify in court.

    Have a strong working knowledge of laws, ordinances, policies and procedures
     as they apply to persons under police care and supervision.

    Provide appropriate emotional and physical support for victims of violent crimes,
     accidents and emergencies.

    Control traffic and guard large public gatherings.

    Maintain a specified level of physical and mental fitness for the position.

    Establish and maintain good relations with the public and other law enforcement
     agencies.

    All other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his designee.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential
duty satisfactorily. To be able to follow procedures outlined in job description, city and
departmental policy and procedure manual. The requirements listed below are
representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable

essential functions. Must be able to interview and talk with suspects, witnesses, and
victims. Knowledge of constitutional rights of individuals.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Must have a South Dakota Driver’s License, and must live within the State of South
Dakota.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business
correspondence, and procedure manuals. Have the ability to communicate clearly and
accurately with others and conduct interviews.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
 Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Have
the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must
have ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or
report form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATION:
Must be able to obtain certification by the State Law Enforcement training within one
year.

hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk; use hands to finger,

50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 170 pounds or more. Must be able to
run a short distance, walk one-quarter (1/4) mile or more and the physical means to
control a person. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust
focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather
conditions; the employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally
works near moving mechanical parts and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to
fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Performance of this position will be evaluated by their supervisor in accordance with the
provisions of the City of Belle Fourche on evaluations.
