Doing the Right Thing
Doing the Right Thing A one day early childhood education conference exploring the development of reflective pedagogy, the role of the educator, educative relationships with children as natural and inquisitive learners. th Date: Friday 19 June 2009 Venue: Great North Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne Time: 9.30 – 4pm Cost: ReFocus members £125 Non ReFocus members £140 As early years educators, we all want to ‘do the right thing’. We recognise the need for a creative and reflective approach to teaching children. But what does this mean in practice? This day will explore the lessons of an action-research project by educators and artists of Walkergate Early Years Centre, Newcastle, with Sightlines, into the creative responses of children within natural outdoor environments, and the effects this has had on thinking and practice. The aim was to support the children in exploring and enquiring, to harness their natural curiosity, their creativity and imagination, to foster their learning about the world and about themselves. The conference is designed to respond to the growing interest in the UK for developing reflective early years pedagogy both in and outdoors. We will highlight the natural richness of the outdoor environment, show how adults can support children’s innate curiosity to explore in nature, and how the natural environment supports the wellbeing and learning of children and adults alike. The conference will include viewing of the DVD, topic dialogue groups and presentations by Helen Moylett (Senior Director Early Years National Strategies.), Dorothy Gregory (Former Headteacher, Walkergate Early Years Centre), Pete McGuigan (Learning Director, CapeUK & Creative Partnerships West Yorkshire), and Robin Duckett (Director Sightlines Initiative). The event will also mark the official launch of the new DVD ‘Doing the Right Thing’ which illustrates the project.
