					                                NATIONAL FALLS
                                AWARENESS DAY,
                                 23RD JUNE 2009

Every year, Help the Aged and Age Concern promote Falls Awareness Day. Their aim is to
raise awareness of the risks of falling, and what can be done to reduce those risks. This
year, their chosen theme is “Falls on Buses”.

Avonsafe

Avonsafe is a multi-agency partnership who work to reduce unintentional injuries. We
campaign, raise awareness and take action on injuries like burns and scalds, falls, and
accidental poisonings. Avonsafe is supporting Falls Awareness Day.

Falls in Avon

It is very important to emphasise that falls on buses are a very small proportion of the total
number of falls that occur each year. We don’t want to put people off using buses.

The majority of falls occur in the home. One of the best ways to avoid falling is to keep fit and
stay active – this helps us keep our balance. Travelling on buses and getting out and about
can help us to do this. But some older people have raised concerns about buses, so we want
to find out more. Giving us your views will help us do this.

Filling in the form

It’s best if you can fill in the form while on a bus, or shortly after having taken a bus ride.

IF YOU ARE HANDING OUT FORMS, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS ARE
INCLUDED AND THAT YOU MAKE IT CLEAR HOW PEOPLE CAN GET THE FORMS BACK
TO YOU before sending completed forms to Rob Benington (address below).

We expect that people over 60 years old will be most interested in this, but of course this
does not stop younger people taking part if they want to.

What we will do next

We cannot conduct a study that will be properly representative of the experience of the
millions of passengers who use a bus every day. But your views and experiences will inform
further work, and we will feedback a summary of what respondents have told us around the
time of Falls Awareness Day.

Concerned about falling?

People who have had a fall, or are concerned about falling, should contact their GP. If there
has been an incident on a bus that you are concerned about, you may need to contact the
bus company directly.
