"Culminating Project Plan Template - PDF"
Name: Jack Radow Project Name: Gaining Experience about Teaching Project Completion Date: December or June 1. Learning Goal I want to volunteer and learn about educating students. By the end of this year I plan to have gained enough experience to become an engaging and helpful teacher who is able to teach effectively. 2. Description of the Project I will volunteer for 30 hours at an after school program at Island Elementary School. Working with the teacher and my mentor I will create a series of 5 possible lesson plans and learn how to interact with children in a school setting. By researching a variety of different lesson plans, I will be able to choose a method that works well for me. Overall, my volunteering work will take 30 hours and all other work will add up to approximately 50 hours. 3. What will the finished project look like? My finished project will be 5 lesson plans that I created based on experience with teaching and educating myself about the art of creating lesson plans. I know that my project was successful if I can present one of my five lesson plans and show that it is effective. Since the graders of my project are teachers, they will be able to accurately judge whether or not I am a good teacher. 4. Justification, Purpose and Significance of the Project I feel very passionate about education and working with children. This project will allow me to explore my passions while helping the community. I can help and volunteer at an after school program where I can be an asset to the parent volunteers. I have some experience with working with children because I baby-sit regularly and have a younger sister. I will write lesson plans to help learn about the entire teaching process. It will raise my confidence that I can effectively teach others but also could steer me in the direction of a future career in an educational field. 5. Resources and Plan for Research The library and the internet both provide great ways for me to research the topic of teaching. I can find books on creating lesson plans and interacting with children. The information I find at the library can be augmented by discussions via phone or e-mail with my mentor. I can also talk to my sibling about his/her experience with teachers. I will start out researching the field of teaching and working on creating an enjoyable and productive environment for the students. I will then talk to Island Elementary and sign up as a volunteer for an after school educational program. Then I will volunteer for 3 hours for 10 weeks according to the program and write 5 lesson plans. After that I will culminate my research and experience into a presentation that I will practice and present. 6. Mentors I will call my grandmother because she is a retired teacher and she can give me advice. I can e-mail or mail some ideas about lesson plans and she can give me comments. That way I will be sure to have good lesson plans. Then I can discuss them with the teacher and further edit them to ensure the best possible outcome. 7. Time Line/ Calendar See Calendar 8. Budget/ Materials I will pay for gas which judging by today’s gas prices will be quite a lot of money but I don’t know exactly how much since the distance is so short (only 1.5 miles). Volunteering is free and the paper for the lesson plans is easily accessible at my house. E-mail is free for contacting my mentor. Therefore the only item on my budget is gas. The materials I need are paper, access to a computer, books and resources from the library and the after school program at Island Elementary School. 9. How do you envision presenting this project? How do you plan to demonstrate to the review panel that you met your learning goal? I will present my information through actually doing one of my lesson plans. I will treat the review panel as a class of students and attempt to interact and teach them about a specific topic. I will demonstrate my knowledge by engaging everyone and keeping their interest throughout the entire presentation. I will, of course, adjust my time to fit the time limit. I do not need any extra technological items. 10. How will we know if you met your learning goal(s)? The review panel will see my 5 lesson plans and experience first hand what I have learned. You will know if I met my learning goal if I am an engaging and informative teacher which should be able to be determined based on the background of the individual members of the review panel. ______________________________ Student Signature ______________________________ Parent Signature
