Template For Writing A Letter To The Editor (LTE)

How To Write A Letter To The Editor (LTE)* Using the EPIC format** For more tips and ways to link to your local newspaper go to: http://drupal.masscosh.org/node/205 E Engage Your Audience Here, you want to get your audience’s attention with a dramatic fact or short statement. Keep this opening statement to one sentence if possible. Problem-State the Problem Here you present causes of the problem you introduced in the first section. How widespread or serious is the problem? As the spotlight shifted from the deaths of two railroad repair workers to the rail accident that took the life of a 15-year old boy, the public is left with a tragic and inaccurate spin that may grease the wheels for more deaths in the future.*** P In fact, there is a pattern of injury and death among railroad workers that is being ignored, due to the absence of safety personnel who were eliminated during privatization, and the failure to institute safety equipment and programs. There have been three other rail worker fatalities in the last four years in Massachusetts – in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Human error is predictable. Redundant safety systems avoid tragic consequences by having multiple safety protections, in case one fails. In 2007, it is inconceivable that we lack electronic methods to pre-schedule track diversions, means of communication with conductors, or flagmen who are stationed to ensure safety for their coworkers. I Inform about Solutions Here you inform the audience about a solution to the problem you just presented. Develop your solution by examples of how and where it has worked. You could site a recent study or report or tell a first-person account of how the solution has impacted you or others you know. Call to Action Now that you’ve engaged your audience, presented the problem and informed them of a solution, what do you want them to do? Make the action something specific. C It's tragic when a worker dies; it's a calamity when employers like Mass Bay Commuter Rail and the MBTA ignore the lessons of the past and fail to put measures in place that will prevent deaths. Write or call the MBTA and Commuter Rail to tell them you support increased safety on the rails. Please visit www.masscosh.org for talking points and contact information. *LTE template taken from MIRA, www.miracoalition.org **EPIC format developed by RESULTS, www.results.org ***Please do not use sample language word for word, it has already been submitted for publication. ***Word limits vary with each paper. You can find guidelines for your paper either on line or by calling.
