Lesson title Shelters Content Social Studies
area
Time of Duration of 30 min.
activities Lesson/Unit
1. Content Area: My lesson will be covering first grade social studies.
2. Topic: My lesson will be on the different shelter/habitats of different animals.
3. Goals: I want my students to come away with the understanding of how each
shelter differs for each animal (beavers, ants, rabbits, chipmunks, bees, birds,
hermit crab) in location, structure, and function.
4. Objectives:
My students will be able to recite how beavers construct their lodges.
My students will be able to explain what the function of a beehive is.
My students will be able to locate what types of areas birds and chipmunks
build their shelters in.
My students will be able to explain what types of materials birds, beavers, and
hermit crabs use to build their shelter.
My students will be able to recite what predators the shelters protect an animal
from.
My students will be able to explain what the structure of a rabbit’s shelter is
like.
5. Technology, materials and aids: I will most likely be using one computer in the
front of the room that is connected to a projector. The projector will project the
website on a screen and I will control the website from the computer. Hopefully, I
can find a pointer (laser or stick) to use during the lesson.
6. Procedures/methods:
a. Overview: My lesson will begin with a general introduction to shelters,
then I will begin to get more specific by talking about certain animals and
their shelters. Each animal will have their own page with images, so that
student is able to visualize the shelter, and facts about the shelter. Some
pages may have videos of animals and their shelter. Throughout the
lesson, there will be activities (games, question, etc.) that will be used to
reiterate what they have learned and to assess their level of understanding.
The lesson will conclude by with an interactive and fun summary of what
has been discussed in the lesson, a short quiz, and a question asking them
to think about their own shelter that they live in.
b. Introduction: The lesson will begin with an explanation of what shelters
are and what their basic functions are. Then I will introduce the animals
that are on the website and, one by one, begin explaining about their
shelters in more detail, but not too detailed because they are only first
graders.

i. Function

3. Conclusion
a. Interactive (between me and students) summary of what

shelter, their house, and think about whether they determine any
similarities or differences between their house and any of the shelters
discussed in the lesson.
7. Technology Framework:
1.1 Develop basic skills for using hardware and applications (e.g., open/close a
file, navigate using scroll bars, arrow keys, special keys, and mouse).
1.7 Collaborate with classmates to use teacher-selected Web sites.
2.1 Follow classroom rules for responsible use of computers.
2.4 Develop understanding of how the computer is a tool for learning.
8. Assessment Plan: After the students have completely viewed the website, they
should be able to differentiate between the different shelters of the animals
presented, understand the function of them, and comprehend how they are
made. Whether they have achieved these objectives or not will be assessed
through the use of a quiz at the end, in addition, questions will be asked
throughout the lesson (The questions used for this part will be the ones in the
evaluation section above. The specifics of the questions depend on what
animal is being discussed). Questions for the quiz that will be asked:
