Lesson Title
Learning the basics of Second Life: Shelter Training and Storing Objects We are all learning the virtual world of second life. In order for the BU graduate students to fully understand how to build structures and store objects, we need to learn about and practice building using prims and storing objects. Once we are well versed with these objectives, I will teach the Freshman how to use prims and build shelters using prims. They can then store objects for their class in these shelters. We get both the experience of learning Second Life and I get the experience of teaching Second Life. This is also a very good lesson on group work and collaboration. Guided Tours: We will meet in Second Life for all our training. I will take them around the MSIT Island and show them where to build the shelter. A Guided Tour will show them around and show them step by step directions. These tours will also allow the freshmen to follow my avatar around and observe what is important in Second Life and to their learning. They will be instructed to practice on their own.

Instructions / Procedure / Mode (how is the class going to be taught)
We will meet in Second Life on MSIT Island. There will be a discussion to make sure they are all familiar with second life. Including flying, communicating and reading the maps. Questions are welcome. There will be a discussion of prims and how to use them. Questions are welcome. I will create and demonstrate how to use prims and walk the students through the process. Questions are welcome. I will instruct them to practice building on their own. Students will create their own shelter with directions. I will give them Second Life SLURL’s to explore on their own and to look at what others built. I will instruct them to explore on their own and practice building. There will be a discussion and demonstration on how to build, store and give notecards. We will try this together. I will give them the notecard script and show them how to use it We will store a notecard in a small shelter we created. Questions are welcome. I will instruct them to practice this on their own. Students will then be asked to store a simple object to be placed in their shelter. We will meet in Second Life many times. Each meeting with will discuss one of these subjects.
Evaluation Strategies
Students will be evaluated by the outcome of their shelter and how well they followed directions. Also, I will be looking for the stored objects in their shelter.
Adaptations
It will be assumed that the students will have little knowledge of Second Life. They each have an avatar and I will show them the basics of second life. Class will meet in second life and everyone will have a headset so that we can speak to each other. Students will adapt to Second Life communication and maneuvering. Some students will adapt quicker than others. Students will learn how build using prims; making a house like structure. They have to understand that the person teaching them is not very familiar with this environment. Students will also learn how to store information on notecards. They have to work together as a group; their groups have been assigned to them.

Screen Captures of Lesson Environment
Since we are all new to Second Life, I anticipate we will have some trouble understanding the concept of prims and manipulating them.
