Kansas Natural History Adapted from K. Sharp by S. Sharp Field Notebook Directions Overview: You will be required to keep a field notebook of some sort for this class, and to make a personal reflection about each field experience outside. Number of entries: You will need to complete 5 journal entries each quarter (less than one per week). Each entry will be worth a total of 15 points, and will be worth 10% of your class grade. While you can do as many in a week as you want, you need to be doing them each of the four quarters, so you will get to study all the seasons and weather changes experienced throughout the year. Time frame: I don’t have a time frame for each journal entry, but you should probably average 30 minutes outside per entry. Don’t time it. Some days you may find lots of things that keep you outside for an hour or more. Some days, you may go in after 20 min. The point is to be actively aware. You will be amazed at what you can find outside when you spend the time looking. Location: You don’t have to go to a park or other area. These journals can be done in your yard, and some may be done from experiences going outside in class. You do not have to go to the same place every time—you can go to as many different areas as you would like. As long as you are outside, you are where you need to be to make some observations. Your observations will be richer if you are in areas with more plant and animal diversity. If you do go to parks or natural areas, and I always encourage getting out, you should go with someone you know or go with your family. Format: You will need to purchase a small field notebook for this class. This is what you should This is what you should take outside with you. Name Date Location: Weather: Time of day and duration of entry: Observations: (this should include species seen, sketches, and overall observations of your experience outside) Requirements: For each entry, you will turn in either your entire field notebook or a photocopy of the notebook page (5 pts) AND a ONE-PAGE reflection of your experience outside, including your overall impressions and thoughts about your outdoor experience. 1 of 1
