The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Millennium
Volunteers
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has delivered the Millennium
Volunteers programme under contract to the DfES since 2001.
During that time the Award has provided certificates of
achievement to over 10,000 young people in recognition of their
commitment to volunteering within their local communities.
As a result of the recommendations from the Russell Commission,
new charity v was launched in May 06 with a remit to widen and
enhance youth volunteering. MV subsequently moved from being
the responsibility of the DfES to be incorporated with v and their
new programme. MV will be rebranded to match the new charity.
The Award is no longer eligible to contract with the new MV
programme directly and as a result will cease to offer MV
certification. However, we will continue to encourage Award
Groups to seek funding directly from v/MV. We are also working
with v to develop other opportunities for youthled volunteering
supported by the Award.
Please note that the Award is no longer taking registrations for
MV. Active MV’s who want to continue with their MV accreditation
will shortly be transitioned to alternative providers. Working with
the DfES and v, the Award is putting in place a clear transition
process. Full details of the transition plan and a list of alternative
MV providers will be communicated at the earliest moment.

v20 Voice
V is a national charity set up in 2006 after 2 years of research into
youth volunteering by the Russell Commission, with the key aim
being to inspire 1 million more young people to volunteer, and to
create a lasting change in the quality, quantity and diversity of
youth volunteering.
They are led by the cares, interests, passions and beliefs of young
people, with the youth advisory board, v20, keeping them
focussed on what matters most to young people, whilst influencing
their work to create a step change in youth volunteering carried
out by v and partners.
As an advisory board, v20 takes part as equals in discussion,
development and implementation of the v goals – to increase the
numbers of young people volunteering, improve volunteer
opportunities and to increase the diversity of volunteers, whilst
developing their own youth led activity.
They are now recruiting for the next v20, as tenure ends on March
31st 2007.
