                      Regulations for the Honours Degree Programmes in

                               Chemistry and Information Technology

  These Programme Regulations refer to the conduct of the programme in the 2009/10
 session and should be read in conjunction with Regulation XX and the relevant Module
  Specifications. Notice of change will be given by the Department responsible for the
                                      programme.

        1.      Structure

                The B.Sc. programme in Chemistry and Information Technology is structured as
                follows:

                Administrative responsibility for the programme rests with the Department of
                Chemistry.

                The duration of the programme is six semesters, or eight semesters if students
                undertake industrial training leading to the award of the Diploma in Industrial
                Studies, or an approved period of study abroad leading to a Diploma in
                Professional Studies, which occurs between Part B and Part C.

                Chemistry modules weighted 60 and Information Technology modules weighted
                60 will be studied in each academic year.

                Where 20 credit modules are taught over both semesters they have a nominal
                weight of 10 in each semester.

The total modular weight for Computer Science modules must be 60 credits for semesters one
and two combined.

3.   Assessment

          3.1     Criteria for Progression and Degree Award

          Candidates must achieve the minimum credit requirements set out in Regulation
          XX in order to progress through the programme and qualify for the award of the
          degree.

           In addition, in order to gain credit for any chemistry module which contains a
          coursework/laboratory component, candidates must obtain at least 40% in the
          coursework/laboratory component of that module.

          3.2     Relative Weighting of Parts of the Programmes for the purposes of
                  Final Degree Classification

          Candidates' final degree classification will be determined on the basis of their
          performance in degree level Module Assessments in Parts B and C in
          accordance with the scheme set out in Regulation XX. The scores for each Part
          will be combined in the ratio Part B 40: Part C 60 to determine the final score.

          3.3     Re-assessment

          Provision will be made in accordance with Regulation XX for candidates who
          have the right for re-assessment in Part A, Part B, Part C or Part D of the
          programme to undergo re-assessment in the University's special assessment
          period. In order to undergo reassessment in the special assessment period,
          candidates must have obtained 60 credits from modules in the current academic
          year. Candidates achieving less than 60 credits, will undergo reassessment in
          the following academic year.

          These Regulations were made by the Associate Dean (Teaching) on behalf
          of the Faculty of Science in 2009.
