Criteria used for journal rankings
These journal rankings are based on the following criteria:
1. Journal rankings reported in academic journals. They include:
(i) Rankings of finance journals by Chung, Cox, and Mitchell (2001).
(ii) Core finance journals used in Chan, Chen, and Steiner (2001).
(iii) Rankings of finance journals based on citations from 1989 to 1993
(Borokhovich et al. (1995) and Fishe (1998)).
(iv) Rankings of finance journals based on citations in 1990 (Zivney and
Reichenstein, 1994).
(v) Rankings of finance journals according to Alexander and Mabry (1994).
(vi) Borokhovich et al. (1994) list of eight mainstream finance journals.
(vii) Corrado and Ferris (1997) list of five dominant finance journals used by 33
finance doctoral programs in the U.S.
(viii) Borokhovich et al. (1995) list of 16 finance journals used for the ranking
of leading business schools in the world.
(ix) Heck and Cooley (1988) list of 15 finance journals used for the ranking of
the 100 most prolific finance professors in the world.
2. The overall quality of the articles published in the journal.
3. Who published in it and where is he/she affiliated?
4. Who is the editor and who sits on the editorial board?
5. The affiliation of the journal. Journals affiliated with major conferences and or
universities are typically given higher rankings.
6. The number of years that the journals have been in existence. Very new journals
(e.g., International Review of Finance and Journal of Computational Finance) are
typically given lower rankings.
