                                         ELECTRICIAN


Western Kentucky University is seeking a full-time Electrician in Facilities Management.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Under general supervision of the Electrical Shop Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor, a person in
this position performs skilled electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair
of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures. An electrician may direct the efforts of an
electrician helper in performing assigned tasks. These duties are normally performed on 1st shift;
however, weekend or other alternative shifts may be required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
  Works or functions as crew leader in the following areas:
   Performs electrical work in installing, maintaining, altering and repairing wiring, power
     appliances, light machinery and electrical circuits.
   Installs, maintains and repairs electric motors, generators and related complex electrical
     and mechanical equipment.
   Installs electrical fixtures and appliances in newly constructed or remodeled buildings.
   Installs conduit in buildings assisted by electricians or electrician helpers.
   Installs new electrical circuits.
   Repair motors and electrical systems on the university farms.
   Trouble shoots on electrical equipment to find problem areas.
   Locates and corrects power failures and short circuits.
   Performs electrical work on time clocks, electric heaters, air conditioners, and air
     compressors.
   Make emergency repairs to elevators, generators and other electrical apparatus,
     appliances and equipment. (Must be available for emergency call-in per university call-in
     procedures)
   Puts in ballast in fluorescent lights.
   Resets alarms.
   Installs underground cables.
   Directs the efforts of one or more electricians or electrician helpers.
   Installs and changes light bulbs.
   Read blueprints.
   Marks underground utilities for contractors (operates locating equipment).
   Provide cost estimates for assigned work. Work closely with university faculty/staff on
     electrical issues.
   Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Education
      High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
  2. Training
      Successful completion of a one-year program of study at an accredited
        vocational/technical school in electrical repair.
    3. Skills
        Journeyman electrical license or equivalent preferred but not required.
        Good communication and interpersonal skills desired.
        Candidates must possess a valid Kentucky driver's license.
        Use of radio protocol.

    4. Experience
        3 years of experience in electrical repair work. Additional applicable experience may
          be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education and/or training.
        Experience in a university campus or industrial setting is preferred, but not required.
          Ability to work around/with high voltage is required.

        *Should also have good performance and attendance records.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
      Overtime will be required during special events and / or emergencies.
      Indoors and outdoors working conditions in all types of weather.
      Strenuous physical labor, which includes heavy lifting, carrying, reaching, bending
        and kneeling.
      Working aloft, in confined spaces, and in hot, noisy mechanical rooms.

Salary Grade: 106        Salary Range: $11.49 - $15.38 per hour
