Butterfly Journal Objective: TEK 2.7A – Observe, measure, record, analyze, predict and illustrate changes in size, mass, temperature, color, position, quantity, sound and movement. Duration: Length of the butterfly life cycle. Materials: Balance Scale Centimeter Ruler Cotton Balls Butterfly Journal Butterfly Larvae/ Caterpillars Vocabulary: egg larvae pupa adult metamorphosis length antennae insect proboscis centimeter mass Actvities: Create a 20 page journal using notebook and construction paper. Allow students to decorate and label cover. Record and illustrate observations and analysis for the duration of the life cycle. *Students will observe larvae and make predictions. 1. What is this? 2. Will it always look like this? 3. How do you think it will change? 4. What are the properties (characteristics)? Illustrate and label what you see. *Students will measure larvae's length using a centimeter ruler and its mass using non-standard units such as cotton balls or grains of rice. Record and illustrate data in journal. *Create a graph to record length and mass three times weekly. *Create a timeline using sentence strips, adding machine tape, or index cards to record growth and changes over the duration of life cycle. *Update journal, graph, and timeline three times weekly. Include predictions and illustrations. Assessment: *Each student will write and illustrate in his/her journal a summary the life cycle of the butterfly after metamorphosis is complete. *Complete journal.
