June 25th 2003 Dear Colleague, I have heard from Nick Campbell at ATR in Kyoto that you have kindly agreed to contribute an overview paper to the special issue ‘Phonetics and Speech Technology’ of Onsei Kenkyu, The Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan. This special issue will be included in Vol. 7, No. 3 of the journal, which is to be published at the end of December in 2003. The list of guest contributors and themes that I received from the guest editor is as follows (arranged in a random order): KenIchi Sakakibara (kis@brl.ntt.co.jp) ‘glottal excitation measurement’ Parham Mokhtari (parham@atr.co.jp) ‘voice-quality extraction’ Alan Black (awb@cmu.edu) ‘speech synthesis’ Steve Greenberg (steveng@cogsci.berkeley.edu) ‘syllables & segments’ Yoshitaka Nakajima (creator-jun@umin.ac.jp) ‘inside the mouth’ Hideaki Kikuchi (kikuchi@waseda.jp) ‘phonetic labelling of the CSJ corpus’ Nick Campbell (nick@atr.co.jp) ‘databases and ptohonetic variance’ You will find below some details about your prospective paper. 1. Length limit: up to 8,000 English words (or less if your paper contains a number of figures and/or tables) 2. Deadline of submission: October 10th, 2003 3. Language: English or Japanese 4. Format: Some information can be obtained by visiting the website of the Society (http://www.psj.gr.jp/e/contribution.html). Please put at the beginning of your paper (just under the paper title and author information) an English abstract of about 100 words and five to eight key words. A sample paper (offprint) can be sent by post upon request. 5. Method of submission: Please send your paper as an email attachment (PDF or Word file) to both the guest editor (Nick Campbell, nick@atr.co.jp) and the editor (Haruo Kubozono, kubozono@lit.kobe-u.ac.jp) by the deadline given above. The editor and editor’s assistant will make an editorial check of your paper and get back to you with some comments, if any. Please revise your paper according to these comments. 6. Final submission: Please send your final paper to the editor at the address below. I would like to receive from you (i) two hardcopies of your final manuscript with camera-ready figures and tables, and (ii) a Word file of the manuscript. Haruo Kubozono, Dept. of Linguistics, Faculty of Letters, Kobe University, Nada-ku, Kobe 657-8501 JAPAN. 7. In preparing your paper, please keep it in mind that the primary purpose of the special issue is to provide the reader (especially young readers such as graduate students) with an overview of each field and some interesting questions for future research. You can of course include your own data and analysis in your paper but please try to cover the relevant field as widely as you can. In the current special issue, we would be grateful if you could pay special attention to the following questions: (i) current trends in speech technology research, (ii) how speech technology can contribute or relate to the study of phonetics and/or (iii) how phoneticians can contribute to speech technology research. 8. Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with an honorarium for your contribution, but you will receive from the Society three complimentary copies of the relevant issue of the journal. In addition, offprints can be ordered at your own expenses at the time of proofreading. If you have any questions, please send them either to the editor or to the guest editor. The editor can respond to your questions regarding the formal aspect of your paper (e.g. format, deadline, etc.), whereas the guest editor will be happy to answer more technical questions concerning, e.g., the topic/area of your paper. Finally, please send me a reply message acknowledging receipt of this mail. I will try to send you this letter by post if I don’t hear from you by email. I look forward to receiving your paper in October. Sincerely, Haruo Kubozono Editor of Onsei Kenkyu, The Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan Dept. of Linguistics, Faculty of Letters, Kobe University, Nada-ku, Kobe 657-8501 JAPAN. kubozono@lit.kobe-u.ac.jp Tel/Fax: +81 (0)78-803-5555
