MScom Excellence-incommunications Lecture 7th MScom Excellence-in-communications Lecture Zurich, October 21, 2008, 18:30 hrs «The Future of Branding» Wally Olins Chairman of Saffron Brand Consultants of London, Madrid, Mumbai and New York Agenda Agenda 17:00 18:00 18:30 Optional guided tour of the Google offices Refreshments and networking Welcome Andreas Schönenberger, Country Manager Google Switzerland GmbH, Zurich Introduction Bertil Cottier, Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences Nina Volles, Managing Director Executive MScom Program Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Lecture «The Future of Branding» Wally Olins, Chairman of Saffron Brand Consultants of London, Madrid, Mumbai and New York Discussion 20:00 Apéro and buffet dinner Topic «The Future of Branding» Wally Olins, the world’s most experienced brand practitioner, discusses five big changes that are affecting the way our world works. First is the increasingly multi polar world in which we all live. A world in which the traditional hegemony of western Europe and north America over cultural and social trends has ended and brands from newly emerging world powers with completely different cultural and social backgrounds are becoming a major influence. Second is the new spirit of the times in which CSR is no longer optional and conspicuous compassion will replace conspicuous consumption. Third on Wally’s list is the new role for corporations – beyond making money for their shareholders. Fourth is what Wally calls the digital spaces and how they facilitate two way conversations between a brand and its stakeholders. Finally, Wally speaks about the ‘sense of place’ that surrounds many of today’s great brands and what role the ‘country of origin effect’ plays in this. As always, Wally is most interested in the day to day effects these changes will have on brands and furnishes his speech with ample examples from his daily practice.
