This document describes how to install DB2000 and the related MQ Series software. DB2000 is
the squadron database management reporting tool. The current version, Ver 9, works under
Windows XP and Windows Vista. Having the most recent operating system updates is strongly
recommended.

The MQ Series Client software, now called WebSphere MQ, is an IBM software tool which
allows DB2000 to connect to a file server at headquarters to transmit data to and from the
server. Having a high speed internet connection is not mandatory since normal dial-up speeds
are sufficient for the on-line functions. However, you must be connected to the internet in
order to download data files and to upload reports and roster updates. Downloading the
DB2000 program or the MQ Series in a dial-up environment will be somewhat time consuming.

DB2000 Installation
   1. If you don’t already have DB2000 installed on this computer, then go to step 3.
   2. If the computer has an existing version of DB2000 installed, you should uninstall the
software before installing the latest version. Existing data files and settings are
      preserved during the uninstall process.
           a. The easiest way to do this is to allow the InstallShield wizard installation to
remove the existing copy. See the section below titled Uninstalling DB2000.
           b. Now, you are ready to re-install DB2000.
   3. If you have the distribution CD given out at the District conference, go to step 4 below.
Otherwise, you will have to download the DB2000 installation software from the USPS
National website. To do so, go to Getting Newer Versions of DB2000 and MQ Series
      below.
   4. Insert the distribution CD for DB2000 obtained at the D16 Conference.
   5. The AutoPlay function displays options for using the disc. Select the “Open folder to
      view files” option.
   6. Windows should open a copy of File Manager showing several folders described in the
document “Contents of DB2000 Distribution Disc.” Start installing DB2000 by double
      clicking on the DB2000R3.EXE icon.
   7. Follow the installation messages to install the program, just like installation of other
      Windows programs.
   8. When finished, you should see a USPS ensign icon on your desktop screen titled “Launch
db2000v3.exe.” Click on this to start DB2000 when you are ready and after MQ Series is
      installed.

to start the download process again after responding to the firewall
                       prompts.
          b. Watch the download status in the box on the lower left corner. A squadron

Uninstalling DB2000 and MQ Series
You can uninstall DB2000 and the MQ Series software from your computer by using the
Add/Remove Programs feature of Windows’ Control Panel. Each program requires a separate
uninstallation process. DB2000 will also uninstall itself if it finds that a copy exists when being
installed, but you will have to run the installation program a second time to complete the
installation of the new version.

Getting Newer Versions of DB2000 and MQ Series
The DB2000 program has periodic updates that are stored on National’s website for
downloading.

It is worthwhile to get on the DB2000 e-mail distribution list by going to DB2000 Information
Index home page at http://www.accurecord.com/usps/outgoing/db2000.htm and clicking on
Subscribe to DB2000 Notification Mailing List. Fill out the form and you will receive e-mail
messages sent to DB2000 users.

Note that the MQ Series software rarely is changed, so if you have a working version you
shouldn’t have to download a new one unless you upgrade your Windows operating system
from XP to Vista.
   1. Download newer versions of DB2000 and MQ Series by clicking on Downloads in the
       DB2000 Information Index.
   2. You will see the “Download Section” showing a table of various components. The
version number and date of the release are shown in the Explanation and Dated
       columns.
   3. Select the file that you want downloaded:

            a. For DB2000, select the first item, DB2000R3.EXE—Complete System Distribution
and click on the “Download Full Distribution for All Windows Systems.”
            b. For MQ Series running on Windows Vista and all earlier versions, select the item
“Download the MQSeries Client for ALL Windows systems.” Note that this is a
135 MB file and downloading it will take a while.
            c. For a smaller download version of MQ Series that only works on Windows XP,
you can click on the 10.5 MB file called “Download the MQ Series Client for
                WIN/NT, 2000, XP”.
   4. Click on Save in the message “Do you want to run or save this file” in order to save the
        download file for subsequent use.
   5. When you get the Save As dialog, store the downloaded installation program in an
appropriate directory or on your desktop and click Save.
   6. The download starts and will take at least three to five minutes on a fast cable TV
internet link for DB2000’s 19 MB. The full 129 MB Windows Vista version of MQ Series
may take 15-20 minutes on a fast cable modem link.
   7. When the download process is complete, you should see an information box saying
“Download Complete”. Click on “Open” to open the folder just downloaded and go to:
            a. For DB2000, step 6 in DB2000 Installation above.
            b. For MQ Series, step 4 in MQ Series Client Installation above.
