1 Executive Summary

1.1 Ke y Ma rke t Tre n d s

            •    Economic slowdown: The Dutch economy posted resilient performance in 2008, owing to a strong
                 first half. However, in the second half of 2008, the Netherlands witnessed slowdown in activity resulting
                 in the economy contracting by 1.1% in 2008. Exports, which form about 80% of the nation’s GDP fell
                 strongly due to weak global demand. Despite the government’s intervention to infuse liquidity, domestic
                 consumption fell owing to weak consumer confidence. Considering the falling consumer confidence and
                 weak exports demand, Dutch is likely to witness economic slump in 2009.

            •    Industry consolidation: Over the past five years, Netherlands’ retail industry has witnessed highest
                 level of consolidation in 2008. While the value of deals was highest at US$4.5 billion in 2008, the
                 number of deals was highest in 2009.

            •    Dominance of general retailers: In the Netherlands, among the channel groups, general retailers had
                 the maximum sales during the year 2008, contributing to 49.0% of the total sales. Hypermarkets and
                 supermarkets mainly contributed the sales in this channel group, which accounted for three-fourths of
                 the channel group. WMI estimates the general retailers to grow at a CAGR (Compounded Annual
                 Growth Rate) of 0.69% over the forecast period.

            •    Robust growth of online retailing: The Netherlands is one of the most advanced broadband markets
                 in the European Union with 90% of the population having access to broadband services. Owing to the
                 high internet penetration in the recent years, the retail industry in the Netherlands has witnessed a
                 strong growth in online retailing. The online retailing in the Netherlands grew at a CAGR of 20.67%
                 during 2004-08. However, with 45% of the country’s population already having broadband connection,
                 the Netherlands’ broadband market is experiencing lower growth rates. WMI estimates the Netherlands’
                 online retailing to grow at a CAGR of 15.60% during 2009E-2013F.

            •    Dominance of food & grocery: Food & grocery, being the necessity, dominated retail sales with
                 49.5% of the total retail market in 2008. Within the food & grocery category, packaged food, drinks, and
                 unpackaged food majorly contributed to the sales.

            •    Strong performance of electricals and electronics: The apparel, accessories & luxury goods has
                 recorded the highest CAGR of 5.48% during 2004-08. The growth in this category was supported by
                 two dominant categories including communication equipment and consumer electronics, forming 60.1%
                 of the total category sales in 2008. Communication equipment grew at a CAGR of 8.21% during 2004-
                 08 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.11% over the forecast period.
