1 Executive Summary

            •     Unemployment: On grounds of social issues like apartheid, South Africa had persistently witnessed
                  higher unemployment levels over years. The country’s unemployment level is above many of the
                  developing economies. In 2008, South Africa witnessed unemployment level of 22.9%, lower than the
                  29.4% in early 2000’s. Increased economic activity in construction, retail, and personal services is
                  generating employment in the recent years in South Africa. Further, the government of South Africa is
                  aiming at substantial reduction in unemployment by way of creating more jobs over its own spending.

            •     Industry consolidation: Over past five years, South African retail industry has witnessed highest level
                  of consolidation in 2009. In 2009, the total deals doubled in number over 2008. By value of deals, South
                  Africa witnessed the value of US$77.4 billion in 2009.

            •     Dominance of specialist retailers: In South Africa, among the channel groups, specialist retailers had
                  the maximum sales during the year 2008, contributing to 57.3% of the total sales. The sales in this
                  channel group were mainly contributed by clothing, footwear, accessories & luxury goods specialists,
                  food & drinks specialists, and home furniture & housewares retailers. The WMI estimates the specialist
                  retailers to grow at CAGR of 10.60% over the forecast period 2009-13.

            •     Robust growth of online retailing: The retail industry in South Africa has witnessed a strong growth
                  in online retailing. Increased broadband options and availability at cheaper prices are the major factors
                  driving the double digit growth of online retailing in South Africa. The online retailing in South Africa has
                  registered a CAGR of 48.04% during 2004-08. With increasing internet users and growing online
                  retailing websites, South African online retailing is expected to grow at CAGR of 34.30% during 2009-
                  13, lower than the growth in preceding years. However, the share of online retailing in the total retail
                  sales of South Africa is negligible, indicating the dominance of the physical store formats.

            •     Dominance of food & groceries: Food & groceries, being the most necessity, dominated retail sales
                  with 46.0% of the total retail market in 2008. Within the food & groceries category, packaged food,
                  unpackaged food, and drinks majorly contributed to the sales.

            •     Strong performance of apparel, accessories & luxury goods: The apparel, accessories & luxury
                  goods has recorded the highest average annual growth rate of 21.30% during 2004-2008. The growth
                  in this category was supported by clothing and footwear, the dominant category group forming 89.2% of
                  the total category sales in 2008. Clothing and footwear category group grew at CAGR of 21.03% during
                  2004-09 and is expected to grow at CAGR of 15.80% over the forecast period.

                  category group contributing 9.6% of total retail sales in 2008, witnessed the lowest growth rate of
