1 Executive Summary
1.1 Key Market Trends

          Share of Retail in GDP: The share of retail industry in the GDP of India is steadily rising. It constituted
          around 8% - 10% of the national GDP in the year 2007. It reached around 12% at the end of 2008 and likely
          to make contribution of 22% by 2010.

          Attractiveness of Retail Market: The retail market of India has been declared as the most favorable market
          for making investments at the global level. Besides this, it is the fifth largest retail market in the world.

          Emphasis on IT: Nowadays, lot of emphasis has been put on utilizing the Information Technology (IT) in
          retail sector to the large extent. Solutions like Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics have emerged as
          among the latest trends in retail industry of India. Besides this, retailers have been able to optimize their
          business by using other tools such as Point of Sale (POS), Supply Chain Management (SCM), Warehouse
          Management Systems (WMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).

          Retail Boom now Spreading to Tier- II and Tier-III Cities: As the current economic boom in India is
          spreading to Tier-II and Tier-III cities and towns, approaching potential consumers in these cities is among
          the high priority list for most of the retail companies. Cities like Noida, Amritsar, Kochi and Gurgaon are
          emerging as the lucrative retail destinations due to their huge growth potential.

          Retailers Focusing on Private Labels: Retailers are nowadays feeling the rising pressure on their margins
          and are hence looking at sales through private labels to improve their bottom lines. Most of the retailers are
          expecting 20%-40% growth in their private label segment within the next three years. The margins offered by
          the private labels are as high as 35%-40%.

          Single Brand Retailing: Huge FDI has been made in the retail trading of single brand after allowing up to
          51% of FDI in it. According to the statistics provided by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP),
          FDI inflow in the sector at the end of September 2009 was around US$47.43 million.

          Organized Retail growing: Currently, the share occupied by organized retailing within the total retail market
          is around 5% and is likely to increase further due to large number of malls and organized retail stores coming
          up in India or under the planning phase. The revival in organized retail sales gives an indication towards
          growing spending by the urban consumers, which is likely to boost the overall business environment.

1.2 Key Channel Trends

          Growth in Online Retailing: The online retail sales in India are growing at double-digit rates (more than
          30%) since last few years. The rising online sales are attributable to the awareness of technology in the
          growing consumers. The online retailing grew at a CAGR of 58.4% during 2004-08 and is expected to
          continue registering double-digit growth in the future as well. Indian consumers are expected to spend INR
          204.6 billion (US$4.7 billion) online in 2009 which is likely to further shoot up to about INR 803.2 billion
          (US$18.5 billion) by 2013.

          Discount Retailers on Expansion Mode: The discount retailers are currently witnessing the growth when
          consumers are cutting their spending. Discount retailers are making expansion plans as against the
          organized retailers who are downsizing their resources and cutting costs in all the possible ways.

1.3 Key Category Trends

          Apparel Dominating Share in Organized Retailing: India has emerged the third most attractive market
          destination for apparel retailers, according to a study by global management consulting firm, AT Kearney. The
          Northbridge Capital report states that apparel is the "largest organized retail category", accounting for 39% of
          the organized market. It is growing at the rate of 12%-15% annually. Organized apparel retail is projected to
          touch US$200 million by 2010 from the current worth of US$120 million.

          Outsourcing driving the stationery market: After the government started emphasizing on providing basic
          education to all, it has resulted in more number of schools in India driving the sales of stationery products.
          The market for office stationery is also growing as many multinational companies have set up their offices
          and outsourced their jobs in India.
