Directions for the lesson and for creating the spreadsheet

This lesson can be used as a lesson in formatting spreadsheets or it can be used in
conjunction with a math lesson on calculating multiple sets of numbers or for complex
equations

1 The class will discuss how a basketball game is scored (ie. How many points for a foul shot, for a field
goal, and for a shot made from behind the three point line - 1pt, 2pts, 3pts, respectively)
2 The class will then discuss how we could make a spreadsheet to automatically update the score of the
game by entering a made shot into a specific category
3 The class will discuss how the points can be calculated mathematically
4 The teacher will then discuss the formula needed for the spreadsheet to calculate the points
5 The teacher can have the students enter the data into a pre-created spreadsheet with the borders,
row and column headings and formatting already in place or the class can complete the exercise
together building the spreadsheet as directed by the teacher
6 Once the spreadsheet is ready for the names and point data to be inputted, the class can begin
creating their personalized score sheet based on their favorite or made up team (see ready made
spreadsheet tab at the bottom of the page)
7 See the formulas tab / sheet to see example formulas
8 The students can use canned graphics from any graphics program or if you have Internet access they
can go to the official web page for the team and copy the logo from there (www.nba.com)
9 The spreadsheet can be customized in may different ways - let the students show their creativity!
