									Federal Employer Identification Number
Your federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) serves the same purpose for your nonprofit as
a Social Security Number serves for you as an individual. It is a permanent number that identifies
your organization in all federal reports, correspondence and documents.

Your EIN will be required on all federal and state tax returns and reports, and on your employee
tax withholding forms. Most banks will not open a corporate account until after you have obtained
your EIN. Therefore, you must obtain an EIN whether you employ anyone or not.

You must file Form SS-4 with the IRS to obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN).
There are several ways to do this:

APPLY BY PHONE (TOLL FREE)
You can obtain an EIN over the phone by calling the IRS’ Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800-
829-4933). The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.
An IRS agent takes your information, assigns the EIN, and provides the number to an authorized
individual over the telephone.

APPLY BY FAX
You may fax your completed Form SS-4 application to Fax-TIN: (859) 669-5760, after ensuring
that the Form SS-4 contains all of the required information. The IRS will assign your EIN and fax
back your assigned EIN within four (4) business days.

APPLY BY MAIL
You may send your completed Form SS-4 to the IRS at the following address: Attn: EIN
Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999. The Service will assign a number and return it to you by
mail. The processing timeframe for an EIN application received by mail is four weeks.

APPLY BY EIN ONLINE
You may apply online on the IRS website and filling out all necessary fields on the online form.
An EIN is issued after you successfully complete the Form SS-4 online.

You can download Form SS-4 from the IRS website. With this in hand, you can fill in the blanks
at your convenience and submit by mail.
