                           RISK ASSESSMENT FORM
Name of Person Completing Assessment Prof. T. Jickells, University of East Anglia, Norwich UK

   1 Subject of Assessment

Deployment and recovery of CTD package

2 Who is doing the Work

   Ships crew
   Scientists

   3 Cruise Number(s) / Location of Work

   AFI 112/3 Marguerite bay

   4 Brief Description of Activity

The CTD package consists of a cylindrical steel framework approx. 2m in height and 1.75m in diameter at its largest point. The
framework supports an array of sensors as well as a variety of water bottle options varying for 10 to 20 litres in capacity.

The overall weight of the package is approx. 750Kg in air.

The task involves lifting the package on the CTD cable amidships, moving it over the side then lowering it into the sea on the
starboard side of the vessel. Recovery is the reverse of this procedure with the additional hazard of increased weight due to
   water collected.

Total CTD deployments on this cruise should be short, but advanced planning and continuous communication with all parties
involved needs to be established to insure that deteriorating weather or ice conditions does not adversely effect either the safety
of those involved in the operation or the vessel itself.
