2008 NetsforLife® Gift Card Campaign to Support Our
Diocese of Olympia One-for-One Malaria Net Challenge

Sample Announcement during a Church Service

For $12, you can give the gift of a malaria net, and save the lives of 3 children for 5 years. Each day,
2,000 children die from malaria – deaths that could easily have been prevented with a net.

Since November 2007, members of our Diocese have raised $320,000, which purchased nearly 27,000
nets. These nets were distributed through Episcopal Relief and Development to families in Africa,
reaching people who live in remote rural areas, at the end of the road. They also received training on
how to use the nets so they understood the importance of sleeping under them every night.

Bishop Greg Rickel and Bishop Nedi Rivera recently announced the continuation of our Diocese of
Olympia One-for-One Malaria Net Challenge during Advent and Epiphany. Please help us reach our
goal of 33,000 nets.

For a tax-deductible donation of $12, you can give a net in honor of a friend or family member. Gift
cards are available and make wonderful Christmas presents. Please see (Parish Net Rep’s name) if you
wish to make a difference this Christmas for a family in Africa.

Thank you for giving what you can in the true spirit of Christmas.

For the price of four lattes, you can save the lives of three children for five years from death by malaria.
That’s also the price of a movie ticket, without the popcorn or soft drink.

Just $12 buys a mosquito net for a family, with education about malaria, training on how to use the
net, and follow-up visits to make sure the net is being used properly. (Show the net, invite children to
stand under it.) That $12 donation is tax-deductible. $120 buys 10 nets which protect 30 people.
$300 shields a village of 25 families from malaria.
Consider this a Christmas gift that you give to a family in Africa. Gift cards are available and make
wonderful Christmas presents, so for each donation of $12, you receive a card which you can give to
someone you love which states you have given a net in their honor.

Episcopal Relief and Development’s initiative to combat malaria, called NetsforLife, provides nets to
the poorest of the poor in the most remote areas of 16 African countries.

Each year, 250 million people get malaria, which is debilitating to their lives. Most of them live in sub-
Saharan Africa. Almost a million people die each year, and 85% of them are children under the age of
5. Each day over 2,000 children die of malaria. That is equivalent to all the Episcopalians in western
Washington dying in a little over two weeks. Malaria is the leading cause of death for children under
age 5, and it’s easily preventable with this $12 mosquito net.

Our diocese has a goal for each of us to buy one malaria net. Bishop Greg Rickel and Bishop Nedi
Rivera call this the One-for-One Malaria Net Challenge. To date, members of our diocese have raised
$320,000, which provided almost 27,000 nets which will save the lives of 80,000 children. Please help
us reach our goal of 33,000 nets, one for every Episcopalian in our diocese. Please see (Parish Net
Rep’s name) to give a net and save the lives of three children.

Thank you for giving what you can. As Jesus said, “just as you do it to the least of these, you do it to
me. (Matthew 25)
