					                              Professor Ian Wallace

Professor Ian Wallace was educated at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh
where he gained his BSc and PhD in Chemistry.

He worked on research into the safety and stability propellants and energetic
materials at the Explosives Resea rch and Development Establishment at
Waltham Abbey . He moved to the Procurement Executive in London where
he was responsible for the acquisition of air weapons. During this period he
was chairman of the MOD’s Aircraft Safety Committee, the Air Weapons
Ballistics Committee and the Thermal Effects (TEACASE) Committee and also
represented Controller Air’s interests in the evolving strategy for lower
vulnerability weapons. He then spent some time as the Controllerate’s
Information Technology Director and was instrumental in creating the
combined IT Directorate for the Procurement Executive.

He was appointed as Scientific Advisor to the Chief Inspector of Naval
Ordnance in Bath where he had particular responsibility for the approval of
explosives for naval service. He was Chairman of the Spearfish Torpedo
Safety Committee and represented CINO on the Trident Safety Committee,
the RBA Safety Committee and AWE’s Warhead Safety Committee. He re-
introduced the Conventional Weapons Study Working Group to examine the
risks posed by ship’s explosives on nuclear facilities in Naval Dockyards.

Professsor Wallace was appointed as Vice President of the Ordnance Board,
the MOD’s Director of Standardisation and Director of Safety Policy for the
PE. In this latter role he helped develop new MOD safety management
arrangements and organisations following the 1997 Strategic Defence Review.
He was responsible for implementing new arrangements in the explosives
area becoming the first Director of the newly formed Defence Ordnance
Safety Group and the Chief Inspector of Explosives for MOD.

He is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Science,
Security and Resilience at Cranfield University’s campus at the United
Kingdom Defence Academy at Shrivenham. His specia l interests are in
explosives safety management, explosives education and in sustainable
development in Defence. He is Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Chemistry he is a member of the Defence Nuclear Safety
Committee.

*No complete record of publications has been maintained, however this lists those of which I
have either a record or a recollection. Most are of course MOD restricted distribution
documents whilst others have been presented in the public domain at National or
International conferences. Whilst not complete the list does provide a reasonably accurate
picture of my professional activities.
