Dear Students and Parents:

In order to participate in the Advanced Placement or Honor Social Studies Programs at Saguaro High School,
you must qualify and sign this form indicating your understanding of the challenges, time and commitment to
study.

Honors classes: World History/Geography Honors American History Honors Economics Honors
(Please circle the appropriate course)

Honors classes are taught at a high standard, so your active participation is essential to the students who are also
in the class. A high level of reading and writing ability are necessary to master the accelerated content and to
critically comprehend the concepts. The requirements for Honors classes are:

      • A's in regular English and social studies class or A's or B's in Honors English and Social Studies
      • Teacher recommendation
      • Good study habits (expect one hour of homework in each of your Honors classes)

Advanced Placement classes: AP US. History AP American Government AP Psychology
(Please circle the appropriate course)

Advanced Placement classes are taught at a college level, and students are expected to take the advanced
placement exam in May for determining college credit. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking skills,
interpretation of documents, and essay writing. Classes often cover two chapters a week. The requirements for
Advanced Placement classes are:

      • A's in regular English and social studies class or A's or B's in Honors English and Honors Social Studies
      • Teacher recommendation (English & Social Studies)
      • Good study habits (expect one hour of homework in each of your Advanced Placement classes)

Students who sign up for these accelerated classes make a commitment upon signing this form to take the
course and put in their best effort. During the drop/add period, which is the first two weeks of each semester,
students may discuss with their teacher and parents about making a change to a regular class, but it will be
dependent on seat availability. After the two-week period, however, the student will be required to remain
in the class until the end of the quarter. Additionally, a change in the class at that time may result in a study
hall. The department chair will determine with teachers and parents which placement is possible.
