Message from the Board –
By Jeff Koches, CAP, Treasurer
Welcome to the New Year!
As Christmas passes and we move into the New Year, it’s traditional to make new resolutions. Often, these resolutions fall by the wayside as we become entangled by events which arise out of the clutter which comprises our normal routine. The best of intentions gets watered down by other circumstances, events, happenstance and crisis until we finally put aside our resolutions as ―something we’ll get back to next year, I promise, really!.‖ Usually this happens about March, at least for myself, as tax time looms over our heads and the bright promise under which we swore our resolve fades under the tarnish of time. Like many other things in life, the more you look at things, the easier they become. Take out that promise you make in January and polish it up every so often. Don’t let that once a day habit fall into once a week, then once a month. Tell a friend who will ask you about it later on in the year. If nothing else, having to answer the question will force you to look again at your resolution and try and keep it. One of the resolutions that I am trying to keep for this upcoming year is raising the awareness for the Retirement Trust Foundation and Vista Grande. The Ways & Means income from the January Raffles will be donated directly to the Retirement Trust Foundation (RTF). In this small way, we will ensure that our chapter supports their efforts. In addition, I promise to have the RTF donation jar out at the reservation table for your donating convenience. As an enclosure to this months Newsletter is an article on Vista Grande and what the Retirement Trust Foundation does for us. See you all next year!

How Can You Win Prizes?
Important Instructions for New Member Applications
By: Donna Royston, CPS, Vice President/Membership Chair
There are several membership recruitment contests that occur throughout the year! Past prizes from International have included $75 gift certificates to various retail stores, televisions, and much more. Marge Suess, President, can attest to the benefits of recruiting new members. She did so well this year that she was presented with a beautiful watch at California Division Annual Meeting held this past June in San Jose. There is only one way for International to know what a great job you are doing. You have to let them know. On Membership Applications, you will see the following lines under the ―Type of Membership Section.‖
Be sure to have the new member include the name of the Chapter (San Diego), the Chapter number (553390), and the Division number (553000). Most importantly, be sure to have the new member include your name and IAAP Member Number on the “Recruited By” line. This is the only way that International and the San Diego Chapter will know that you brought the new member to our Chapter. The San Diego Chapter Board Members are anticipating a year of great success in recruiting and retaining members. As a member, you know the benefits, and I encourage you to share the benefits with your co-workers and friends.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD
Each year, your Board designates that a cash award be given to the member(s) who have perfect attendance at dinner meetings, beginning in August 2006 through May 2007. This year’s award(s) will be presented at the May 2007 dinner meeting. The following members (through December’s meeting) are on their way to getting the PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD! (Board members are ineligible.) Dianne Berg Sue Gannon CAP Cindy Garofalo CPS Kristine Hilly Lori Poore CAP Sandi Prescott Sharon Robertson Nancy Talbert

SPEAKERS BUREAU
We are thinking of developing a Speakers Bureau, which would consist of volunteers who would be willing to go to companies and talk about IAAP and the San Diego Chapter. We would put together a packet of information materials for the speakers to use and perhaps also offer a CD that IAAP HQ has available. The idea is that this would be a good outreach effort in addition to inviting interested parties to attend Chapter meetings/events. One way to get this information out would be to have it listed on the Chapter’s Website with a link to a ―lead‖ person who would then match a volunteer speaker with the group requesting a program. Not only is this a good membership outreach, but it’s also a good way to gain recertification points for those members who have achieved the CPS/CAP designations. Co-chairs of this effort are Donna Royston and Deborah Gunn. Please let us know if you would be interested in becoming a volunteer speaker (Deborah Gunn, 619/699-1912 (dgu@sandag.org); Donna Royston, 619/725-6062 (droyston@portofsandiego.org). Thanks! Deborah Gunn CAP and Donna Royston CPS

Education Corner
Education Ideas We have a very diverse group in our Chapter: from beginning administrative professionals to retired professionals; male and female administrative professionals; and starting a new career to 30- and 40-year veterans. This type of diversity has different training needs and requirements. Also, I have heard people say they want to help but don’t have the time to be on a committee or live too far away to be active in more than attending the monthly meeting. Here is your chance to be of help to all our members: Send me your ideas! Do you have a training need or idea? Do you have a speaker or meeting format idea? Do you have a location idea (remember, we usually have 35-40 people attend our monthly meeting)? Do you have an outreach idea? What other ideas do you have that could benefit the Chapter? Getting ideas in these areas are as important as having a ―body‖ helping. As a board of six members, getting ideas from the other 86 members in our Chapter puts more of our diversity to work than having those 86 members not doing anything else for the Chapter. So remember, submit those ideas to any of your board members or just send me an email (gloria.butterfield@vanir.com). I will make sure the ―right‖ person gets all submitted ideas. Gloria Butterfield Rossiter, CAP Recording Secretary and Education Chair

Vista Grande
A Place in the Sun... for you!
1947 by Della Herring, who contributed the first dollar to a new retirement fund. Vista Grande is the Retirement Trust Foundation’s most long-standing project. Our ―place in the sun‖ was envisioned in Over the next 20 years, the fund grew from members’ contributions, and in December 1970, groundbreaking ceremonies were held on what would become Vista Grande. Our community continued to expand until the final dedication ceremonies were held on October 7, 1983. Vista Grande now consists of a total of 168 units and continues to improve. Retirement living at Vista Grande is by application from people who are 62 and up and: IAAP members and their families Former IAAP members and their families Administrative professionals who are not members of IAAP and their families People who have never been administrative professionals When your application is received, you are placed on a waiting list for occupancy on your desired move-in date or as soon as possible thereafter. A financial statement is required for occupancy and financial need is a consideration for acceptance.
Amenities at Vista Grande
Many of the amenities at Vista Grande find their home in the Community Building. The Mildred Barr Library has books and videos, as well as a comfortable area for reading by the fireplace. The Lillian C. Martino Arts & Crafts Room holds quilting sessions and has an active Project Happiness group, that knits blankets and baby items for charities. The Community Building also houses an exercise room where we have a monthly class on using all the equipment (both active and passive) to benefit you! A beautiful gazebo, named for Della Herring, is a picturesque setting for outdoor gatherings. We also have many activities for Vista Grande residents, including holiday cookouts and parties, bingo, community projects, and card games. Participation in all activities is, of course, voluntary.
Vista Grande Convenience
Vista Grande has all the features you would expect from any premier retirement community, including: A coin-operated laundry center Private resident mailboxes ―Coffee Breaks‖ with scheduled guest speakers. Some of our recent speakers have included attorneys, doctors and public safety officers Monthly resident potluck dinners Organized craft activity sessions Convenient, free parking A fully-equipped kitchen for resident use on special occasions Plus a chapter of IAAP just for Vista Grande residents!

About the Retirement Trust Foundation and IAAP
The International Association of Administrative Professionals was first established in 1942. Its vision is simple: to inspire and equip all administrative professionals to attain excellence. In 1958, a Declaration of Trust created the National Secretaries Association Home Trust Fund. The Retirement Trust Foundation was created in 2000. This independent, nonprofit organization is administered by a six member International Board of Trustees, four of whom are elected at large from the membership of the International Association of Administrative Professionals and serve with the IAAP International President and Treasurer. The IAAP Retirement Trust Foundation is a tax-exempt charitable organization. Contributions made to the Foundation are deductible. Bequests, legacies, devises, transfers or gifts to or for the Trust’s use are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes. The Trust was formed and operates exclusively for charitable purposes; i.e., for the primary purpose of acquiring, maintaining and operating homes for needy and elderly administrative professionals and otherwise assisting needy and elderly administrative professionals. The demand for comfortable, affordable housing for retired administrative professionals is growing, and the RTF seeks to help fill that need with Vista Grande. The Retirement Trust Foundation meets four times a year to approve projects, ensuring that Della Herring’s dream of a retirement center for administrative professionals continues. The benefits of the RTF begin from the time you become a member if IAAP. The trust publishes RTF reVisions quarterly for all members, sponsors sessions at international conventions, and is currently working on an online resource center of links and other information for retirees and future retirees. The only RTF benefit that is limited to IAAP Members is receiving RTF reVisions on a quarterly basis. The Trust has grown with small change and dollars contributed by IAAP members and with proceeds from special IAAP members and with proceeds from special IAAP fundraising events. Many Vista Grande amenities have been funded by contributions to honor or in memory of IAAP members and others. Your donations are welcomed.
