Through the Bay Window Volume VII, Issue 5 San Diego Chapter Message from the Board December 2006 Message from the Board – Meeting Reminder Wednesday, December 6, 2006 San Diego Marriott Mission Valley 8757 Rio San Diego Drive San Diego, CA 92108 619-692-3800 by EvE’ Bond CPS, Corresponding Secretary MERRY CHRISTMAS! Yes, I’m pleased to tell you that Merry Christmas is politically correct, this year. Some of the stores are even encouraging employees to give that greeting to their customers. Seems customers didn’t like the Happy Holidays greeting that was politically correct last year. Well, fancy that! I’ll tell you a secret: I was politically incorrect all during last year’s Christmas season. I wished the clerks at checkout counters a Merry Christmas; my dentist and his receptionist, each; the gas station attendant at AM/PM; my manicurist; my tax accountant; the waitress at the coffee shop; and many chapter members - all received an enthusiastic, ―Merry Christmas!‖ There was a wide variety of faiths and beliefs in that group, you can be sure. When I wished my Jewish brothers and sisters, ―Merry Christmas,‖ most responded in kind – some also added, ―and Happy Hanukkah, EvE’.‖ Several African American friends responded with, ―Happy Kwanza!‖ So, you see, many times I received two greetings for giving one! How great is that?! The really amazing thing is that no one appeared offended and they obviously didn’t report my infraction because no PCP (Politically Correct Police) ever came to carry me off to a cell for the politically incorrect. Of course, come to think of it, they may have been on Christmas-break. Since America was not founded on atheism and the Pilgrims and millions who followed came here to practice religious freedom, I think it’s safe for me to follow that practice, as well. Makes you wonder, though, doesn’t it? What will be politically correct for Christmas next year? Rest assured, no matter what the PC group has in store for us, I’ll still be wishing each of you, whatever your belief, and however you respond (or not), a non-offensive and heartfelt, Merry Christmas! God bless us, every one! $3 per car self-parking charge 5:00 pm Networking 6:00 pm Dinner 7:00 pm Program Bell Ringers From the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach And Silent Auction (Don’t forget to bring your items for the Silent Auction) Inside this Issue Message from the Board ................. 1 Board Directory ............................... 2 Birthdays & Anniversaries ............... 2 New Members………………………..2 Chapter Programs ........................... 3 Raffle Tickets Reminder……………..3 Ways & Means Info ......................... 4 New Speakers Bureau Forming ...... 4 Roster Info Reminder………………..4 October Meeting Minutes ............. 4-5 Education Corner ......................... 6-7 IAAP Int’l. Important Instructions for New Member Applications By: Donna Royston, CPS, Vice President/Membership Chair There are several membership recruitment contests that occur throughout the year! Past prizes from International have included $75 gift certificates to various retail stores, televisions, and much more. Marge Suess, President, can attest to the benefits of recruiting new members. She did so well this year that she was presented with a beautiful watch at California Division Annual Meeting held this past June in San Jose. There is only one way for International to know what a great job you are doing. You have to let them know. On Membership Applications, you will see the following lines under the ―Type of Membership Section.‖ Be sure to have the new member include the name of the Chapter (San Diego), the Chapter number (553390), and the Division number (553000). Most importantly, be sure to have the new member include your name and IAAP Member Number on the “Recruited By” line. This is the only way that International and the San Diego Chapter will know that you brought the new member to our Chapter. The San Diego Chapter Board Members are anticipating a year of great success in recruiting and retaining members. As a member, you know the benefits, and I encourage you to share the benefits with your co-workers and friends.      RAFFLE TICKETS REMINDER Dinner meeting is $30. Raffle tickets are 3 for $5.00. You may make out your check for $35.00 in advance to pay for the dinner AND purchase raffle tickets. Having your check ready when you arrive helps expedite reservation processing. Thank you! PLEASE NOTE: Because of the Silent Auction, there will be no raffle at the December meeting.      3 T hro u g h t he B a y W i nd o w Sa n Di e go C hap t er WAYS AND MEANS – DECEMBER ** SILENT AUCTION ** We will hold our annual Silent Auction at the December 6, 2006, dinner meeting. This is really a fun event, with everyone vying for that favorite item! We look forward to everyone participating by bringing an auction item to the December meeting. The auction items can be anything from holiday decorations, gift baskets, homemade baked goods, fudge, jewelry, bath products, skin products, anything that YOU might want to have. We will provide extra tables and bid sheets for your use. There will only be entertainment at this dinner meeting, so feel free to bring friends, family, and coworkers. We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks for your support of our Chapter through participation in the Silent Auction. Nancy Talbert, Ways and Means Chairman      SPEAKERS BUREAU We are thinking of developing a Speakers Bureau, which would consist of volunteers who would be willing to go to companies and talk about IAAP and the San Diego Chapter. We would put together a packet of information materials for the speakers to use and perhaps also offer a CD that IAAP HQ has available. The idea is that this would be a good outreach effort in addition to inviting interested parties to attend Chapter meetings/events. One way to get this information out would be to have it listed on the Chapter’s Website with a link to a ―lead‖ person who would then match a volunteer speaker with the group requesting a program. Not only is this a good membership outreach, but it’s also a good way to gain recertification points for those members who have achieved the CPS/CAP designations. Co-chairs of this effort are Donna Royston and Deborah Gunn. Please let us know if you would be interested in becoming a volunteer speaker (Deborah Gunn, 619/699-1912 (dgu@sandag.org); Donna Royston, 619/725-6062 (droyston@portofsandiego.org). Thanks! Deborah Gunn CAP and Donna Royston CPS      ROSTER INFORMATION REMINDER If you haven’t already, please complete and return the form that was e-mailed to you requesting telephone updates for the abbreviated 2006/2007 Chapter Roster. She earned money for college by serving her country in the US Army as a Korean analyst and linguist from 1985–1989. Tracy holds several other designations including: Certified Property Manager from the Institute of Real Estate Management; Certified Instructor for Time Power; and Certified Instructor for Achieve Global. 6 T hro u g h t he B a y W i nd o w Sa n Di e go C hap t er Tracy’s love for learning began in a small town in Portsmouth, Ohio. Her father was an instructor and counselor at Shawnee State University. Before Tracy started kindergarten, her father discovered something that was going to change the rest of their lives, mnemonics. Anxious to see if his new discovery really worked, he taught Tracy how to memorize the presidents in one evening (forwards and backwards) before she had even started school. The method he used to teach Tracy was called the story tell method and it is one of the many mnemonic techniques Tracy shared with us. Tracy’s vision, expertise, and creative partner, Lisa Larkin, helped to shaped The Irvine Company’s Customer Committed program, a customer service programmed based on providing world-class customer service and a culture of excellence. In addition, she and Lisa have overseen the creation of The Irvine Company Office Properties’ training program, now in its fourth year, called TIC University. In today’s fast-paced work environment, it’s not unusual for people to overlook workplace etiquette and protocol; however, a little courtesy goes a long way in paving the road toward a successful career. People have long memories when it comes to how you interact with them. The niceties you extend now will be remembered and could increase the likelihood that contacts will want to work with you in the future. Following are some courtesy ―checkpoints‖ to help you put your best foot forward at work:  Value others’ time. Never assume a coworker is less busy than you are. Show respect by sticking to project deadlines, returning messages promptly and arriving on time to meetings. 9 T hro u g h t he B a y W i nd o w Sa n Di e go C hap t er     Clean up after yourself. Don’t inconvenience others by leaving last week’s leftovers in the office refrigerator or paper jammed in the copier. Be courteous. Remember to say ―please‖ and ―thank you,‖ even in brief e-mail messages. If you sense a problem or have bad news to deliver, don’t play phone tag — meet in person instead. Respect boundaries. Be sensitive to your coworkers’ need for privacy. Knock before entering anyone’s workspace and ask whether it’s a good time to talk before launching into a discussion. Give credit where credit is due. Always let your manager or team members know when you’ve received help on a project and be sure to praise your colleagues on a job well done. Most people enjoy working with a polished and polite professional, and those who display courtesy are often looked to first when new opportunities arise. Improving your workplace manners is key to earning the respect of your peers and a prominent position within your organization.
