Coachella Valley Marriage Equality Coalition, the Desert Pride Community Center
and Equality California Sponsor Town Hall April 28

Palm Springs, April 20, 2009

The Coachella Valley Marriage Equality Coalition, the Desert Pride Center
and Equality California are co-sponsoring a Town Hall meeting at Desert
Pride Community Center on Tuesday April 28, from 6-7:30 PM. This is one
of a series of nine Town Halls around California in anticipation of the
Supreme Court decision regarding Prop 8. The meeting will include
updates from Prop 8 legal experts and an open discussion on the future of
the marriage equality movement.

Guest speakers include Attorney Shannon Minter, who argued before the
California Supreme Court for Prop 8 to be overturned and will describe the
legal aspects of the court's decision, and Marc Solomon, former executive
director of MassEquality, the organization that led the successful fight for
marriage equality in Massachusetts. “It’s been my greatest honor to help
protect marriage rights in Massachusetts,” said Solomon in a statement.
“I’m excited to take the lessons we’ve learned to California, and I’m so
pleased MassEquality will continue to help other states win marriage
equality while advancing a full equality agenda in Massachusetts.”

Minter said, “Proposition 8 jeopardizes not just the right of same-sex couples to marry, but
the rights of all Californians to be treated as free and equal citizens of our state. Equal
protection for all citizens is the hallmark of American democracy. If upheld, Prop. 8 would
undermine that central, defining guarantee and the unprecedented freedom that it has
enabled us to enjoy. That is what is at stake in this case. As legal director of the National
Center for Lesbian Rights, I have been honored to be a part of such significant case, not
just for the LGBT community, but for all citizens of California.”
The goal of the Coachella Valley Marriage Equality Coalition is to secure and enforce the
constitutional right for Gay and Lesbian couples in California to marry; and to work towards
securing those rights for all LGBT Americans.

The Desert Pride Community Center is at 611 S. South Palm Canyon DR. in
Palm Springs. The meeting is free and open to the public.
