Access to Club House
The clubhouse is open from 9am daily until late evening. If the main doors are locked then you can gain access via
the door next to it, which has a coded keypad. All members are encouraged to know the four digit number and should
ask any committee member for the current number as it is changed periodically. When the clubhouse is locked for the
night the main doors will have shutters lowered in front of them and the clubhouse will be alarmed and no access will
be possible via the coded keypad side door. If you see the shutters down please do not go into the clubhouse as the
alarm will be on, just stay within the changing rooms side of the clubhouse.

American Tournaments
American Tournaments take place during bank holiday afternoons and, occasionally, on Friday evenings during the
summer months. They involve 7 or 4 short games of mixed doubles with participants paired up with different random
partners through the course of the event and aiming to accumulate as many points as they can. The aim of the event
is to have fun and meet other club members in a relaxed environment and the tournament will involve a relaxed tea
break either during the afternoon or at the end of the evening. All players, of any standard, are welcome to join in. A
fee of £4/5 is charged to cover the balls and tea. Dates can be found on the Website or on notices in the Clubhouse.

Club House
Our new clubhouse opened in January 2008, and is run by our fulltime club manager, John Kaluza. John can be

toilets accessible close to the courts all day, 7 days a week. The clubhouse has wheelchair access and facilities
suitable for the disabled. Please do not take Sports bags into the Clubhouse but them on leave on the racks outside.
Club Sessions – Tuesday/Thursday evenings and Tuesday and Sunday Mornings
These sessions are open to all club members and allow players to participate in doubles matches (both men’s and
ladies’ as well as mixed) for a set with other club members. This gives everyone a chance to mix in and meet people
and play some tennis without having to ring around for a partner. Everyone is welcome to come along. On the Winter
evenings the Floodlight tokens are paid for by the Club. Sunday morning 10am – 12.30am, Tuesday morning 10-
12pm, Tuesday and Thursday evening 6.30 – 9pm.

At the end of 2008, the club was awarded the LTA ClubMark, which is a formal national accreditation, showing that we
have good processes and policies in place, particularly in relation to junior development. We are one of the first
Tennis clubs in Oxfordshire to have been awarded ClubMark.

We get the vast majority of the money to run the club from the membership fees, though we also earn some money
from hosting tournaments.
About half of our budget is spent maintaining the courts, 18% on running the clubhouse (the costs of which are shared
with the Hockey club). 16% of our budget is spent on repaying the loans we have with the LTA. We have an £ 80,000
loan for the recent clubhouse refurbishment, and a £ 15,000 loan for floodlights that was taken out years ago. Both
loans are from the LTA, and are interest-free. We do not own much as a club except a long-term lease from the
Council on the courts & clubhouse. Our accounts are audited by the most qualified person who is willing to audit them
each year.

Coaching - Juniors
The club retains the services of two LTA Licensed Coaches to deliver a comprehensive and competitive programme
for Juniors and Adults. All the Coaching team are CRB checked and hold up to date coaching qualifications.

The Coaching programme offers a term time and holiday pathway to all our Junior Members and children at local
schools and in the parks. The coaching team are currently working towards LTA Satellite Accreditation, which will
provide more support for our players. For further details please contact Chris Hampton on 07870 169215.

Coaching – Adults
We have sessions and courses for beginners, improvers and advanced levels of players as well as team coaching -
You can also have coaching in groups made up of your friends or individual lessons.
Every block of sessions finishes with a friendly tournament & drinks in the bar afterwards! For beginners & improvers
the cost is only £5.50 per hour. For Advanced lesson’s it is £10 per hour.
For further information on any group please feel free to contact Chris Hampton on 07870 169215.

The Committee comprises members of the Club who have volunteered their time to help in the running of the Club
and meet every four weeks. The Committee members are elected onto the committee at the AGM which is usually
held in February. As a thank you each Committee member is offered the option to buy a pair of Wimbledon Tickets
from the Club’s allocation. If you would like to join the Committee please contact Janet Thomas email

Court Booking – Online
You can access the court schedule online by following the link from our web site (, follow the
“Our News & Events” option, then “Court Schedule”, or via the community website ( ).
All you need to use it is the email address that you put on your membership form when you joined. You can also
access the court booking computer in the clubhouse, for which you do not need an email address. Please cancel
courts if you decide you will not be using them after all.

Court Maintenance
We have a schedule of maintenance for the tennis courts. Broadly speaking, we maintain the hard courts, and the
Council charges us for the maintenance of the grass courts. During its life a hard court has to be regularly cleaned,
washed and treated with moss killer. The bulbs in the lights need replacing every few years as well. They also get
repainted every few years, and eventually resurfaced. We have a court vacuum machine for cleaning the courts of
pine needles and general rubbish, which we use ourselves. All other major court maintenance is contracted out to
tennis court maintenance companies.

Court Etiquette and Tennis Clothing
Please wear appropriate tennis wear on court. Please wait for players to finish their game before passing at the back
of the court or entering a court. Please do not use inappropriate language on court and in the clubhouse. Please let
down nets at the end of your game.

First Aid/ First Aiders
There is a First Aid box in the clubhouse lobby along with a list of First Aiders.
Floodlight Tokens
Floodlight tokens can be purchased from Vaughan at the bar, they cost £4 for an hour.

Grass Courts
The Grass courts open on May 1 weather permitting and are playable from 11am when they have completely dried.
Please make sure you wear appropriate tennis shoes for grass, not trainers or shoes with deep ridges.

Each member is allowed to bring a guest/s to play at the Club. The same guest is only allowed to play on 3 occasions.
There is a guest fee of £3 per person, please use the envelopes provided in the lobby and post through letter box in
the door under the Online court booking monitor.

Hire of Bar/room
Members are encouraged to hire the clubroom which is superb for private functions and normally no fee is charged
but please speak to the clubhouse manager, John Kaluza, for full details of hire. The clubroom can accommodate up
to one hundred guests and is available for hire on the evenings of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and a licensed bar
would be available in addition to the use of kitchen. All that we ask is that it is cleaned at the end of the evening to the
standard that it was made available to you.

The club provides opportunities for young people between the ages of 4 and 19 to receive coaching and competition.
All coaching is by qualified coaches who are trained and have been screened for their suitability to work with young
people. See Junior Coaching. Juniors under the age of 14 must not be on the courts or in the Clubhouse without adult

Kitchen usage
Members and their guests are welcome to relax after a game in the clubroom and make themselves a cup of
complimentary tea or coffee in the kitchen. Normally you would need to access the clubhouse via the door with the
coded keypad (see above under the access to clubhouse heading) and naturally we would ask that you wash up to
leave the kitchen clean and tidy for other members. The kitchen is closed at 6pm on weekdays, but the bar is open
from 6.30 pm which provides both alcoholic and soft drinks in addition to tea and coffee.

Membership Rules to be found in the Constitution
Membership of the Club shall be open to all persons irrespective of ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or
beliefs; or of age, sex or disability except as a necessary consequence of the requirements of tennis as a particular
sport. The Club may refuse membership or expel from membership only for good and sufficient cause, such as
conduct or character likely to bring the Club or sport into disrepute. Appeal against such a decision may be made to
the Club’s members and decided by a majority vote.

Members Club – Helping at the Club
North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club is a Members Club run by volunteers from the Membership. The club relies on as
many members as possible contributing some of their time and effort in helping with the numerous tasks involved in
keeping the Club running smoothly. We always need members to help with running American Tournaments, looking
after Club nights, Social Events such as Dinner Dances, Quiz nights and generally helping around the Club. Please do
try and put in a few hours each year to help your club.

Membership Rates
The membership year for the majority of members runs from April to March, though we now have rolling membership
for new members who join during the year. We have several membership categories , Individual £232, Family £412

Mini Tennis
North Oxford tennis club runs an LTA Accredited programme for players aged from 4 – 10 yrs, The programme is
broken down into red, orange and green level, and depending on the child’s age depends on the level, equipment,
scoring format and size of the court you play in. For example mini tennis red ( 5 – 7 yrs) , play with larger and softer
balls, over a smaller net, badminton sized court and tiebreak scoring is used. The mini tennis programme runs after
school, and Saturday mornings. For more details please ring Chris Hampton 07870 169 215

New members
The club welcomes new members and we try and ensure they feel fully integrated into the club as early on in their
membership as possible. Please do introduce any of your friends to the Club.
Three or four times a year we produce a colour newsletter which we aim to make informative, yet informal. We focus
on goings on at the club – both on the court and on the social side – and report on team play, profile a club
personality, and provide snippets of news that you may have missed. A copy will be e-mailed to you with copies
placed in the Clubhouse. Newsletter Editor Catherine Jackson 07773672783

North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club’s Constitution
A copy of the Club’s constitution can be found on the notice board in the reception area.

Playing Facilities
North Oxford has 10 excellent grass courts (used every year by the LTA for County Week) and 9 floodlit all weather
courts. 6 of the 9 all weather courts were resurfaced in 2005. The remaining 3 courts were resurfaced in 2006, so they
are all in great condition.

Social Events
As well as playing tennis, we appreciate that our members want to get to know one another away from the courts too
so we aim to hold social events throughout the year, some with our friends at the hockey club, and some for just
tennis club members. Regular events include quiz night and wine tasting, but we are always open to suggestions as to
new ways to bring people together. All events are highlighted on the Website and on Notice Boards in the Foyer.
We also require help running these events so please do contact Catherine Jackson 07773672783 to volunteer.

Singles Ladder
An informal and fun mixed singles box ladder open to adult and junior members from virtual beginners to our best
players. Players in each box arrange to play each other round-robin style. Normally the ladder operates in cycles of
five or six weeks and you play against similar level players to yourself and try to advance to a higher box for the next
cycle. Further details please contact Peter Oates.

Social Network site
The NOLTC members community has been setup to work in conjunction with the main NOLTC website and provide a
wealth of features to enable members to play more, compete more and meet more.
Members are able to network with other members, arrange social tennis matches, get some coaching, get British
Tennis membership and get an LTA rating, book a court, join a team, and view results and photos from club
competitions and tournaments.

Team Tennis and Team Practice night
We have lots of competitive tennis going on throughout the year with 7 Men’s, 4 Ladies & 3 Mixed Teams all
competing at various levels of play in the Oxfordshire Leagues. Then we also have 2 Men’s, 1 Ladies and 2 Junior
teams competing in the National Club Leagues. If any new members would like to join a team please contact either
the Ladies or Men’s Club Captain. We have an organised team practice night every Monday (men) and Tuesday
(women) from 6.30. The team captains organise the pairings.

The website is maintained by Jonathan Patterson and hosted by Alberon
(, which is a company one of our members is involved in), and we aim to have as much information
there as possible, an up to date calendar of events, previous newsletters, membership forms, and anything else we
think a prospective/current member would find useful.

Wimbledon Tickets
Club members are eligible to enter the Wimbledon Club ballot as long as they have registered as a British Tennis
Member. A draw sheet will be placed in the Clubhouse reception in May as well as the opportunity to sign up on the
NOLTC Community site. Tickets are available as pairs and the lucky winners in the ballot have to agree they will not
sell or pass on the tickets to a third party. In the event of a member selling their Wimbledon tickets it will jeopardise
NOLTC’s allocation of tickets in subsequent years.
