PC. This is located on top of the bench. Ensure that this is powered on (there will be an indicator light). If not, press the power button on the front of the PC, which will then take a few minutes to boot up. Keyboard and mouse. Audio. This controls sound from the PC (or your laptop). If you require audio, press the power button on the audio box to turn it on and adjust the volume to desired levels. Note that on some benches the Procon controls (see below) use volume buttons instead. To turn on the smart board, there are two options, depending upon which room you are in. Please follow the option indicated for the smart board in this room: OPTION 1 This bench uses Crestron controls. OPTION 2 To turn the smart board off, press and hold the select button for five seconds. Press the select button (a green light comes on next to it). Under the bench is a small box marked Crestron. YES/NO This bench uses Procon controls. This control is located on top of the bench or on the wall near the smart board. Press the on button. To turn the smart board off, press the off button. YES/NO The projector powers up, and lights up the smart board. Note: If this does not occur, you may need to press the power button on the projector itself. Calibrating the smart board Using the keyboard and mouse, login to the computer with your University username and password. A very common problem experienced is that the end of your finger or the pen is misaligned with what happens on the smart board: the ‘orientation’ is out. It is a good idea before you begin to spend a minute calibrating the smart board. To do this, look at the smart board icons on the screen, and press with your finger on the configuration button. Press with your finger on the orient/align the smart board button. The smart board control panel appears. The crosses travel across the screen each time you press on them. Once finished your calibration is complete and you can proceed to use the smart board. Please proceed to do this but it is recommended that you pick up one of the pens at the base of the board instead of your finger as the pen will be much more accurate. The next screen tells you to press in the exact centre of a series of crosses that appear on the screen. Using the smart board Pressing gently on the smart board is the same as a left-click with a mouse. Double-press to open an application. Drag to select an area. Your finger is the mouse. If you need a keyboard, you can either revert to the keyboard on the smart board bench or press the keyboard button at the base of the smart board to bring one on-screen that you can touch-press. To right-click, press the right-click button on the base of the smart board. The next finger-press that you do will be a right-click. To write over your screen, applications, etc. pick up a blue, red or green pen from the pen tray at the base of the smart board. Writing and erasing notes To erase your pen marks, pick up the eraser and rub out. To change colours, simply put the current pen back in it’s slot on the tray, and pick up an alternative one. Note: Make sure that only one pen/eraser is out of it’s slot at any one time. Otherwise the results may not be what you expect. Ensure that all pens and eraser are back in their slots when you use your finger as a mouse. More options: the floating tools Click on the floating tools button in the smart board toolbar. Capture screen image Use as mouse Pen as a finger Highlighter Right-click as next press A new palette floats at the top of the screen. Undo-redo last press Finger as eraser Attaching a laptop On the top of the smart board bench, there will either be a laptop monitor and audio cable or a small black control unit set into the bench. If there are cables Plug the monitor cable into the VGA output socket of your laptop, and the audio cable (if required) into your headphones socket. If there is a control unit To turn the projector on for the laptop, press the select button on the unit. To turn it off again, press and hold the button for five seconds. A VGA monitor cable (not supplied) can be attached from the monitor output of your laptop to the input on this unit. You now need to route the screen through the projector by pressing the relevant F (function) key on your laptop. These vary depending upon the make of laptop. Some examples are: Toshiba fn F5 Dell fn F8 Apple auto detect IBM fn F7 Note:The laptop function only allows your laptop to be projected onto the smart board. The smart board functions (finger-press, pens, etc.) do not work.
