As described on page 2, double-click the My Computer icon to open a new pane with the drives showing. Double-click on the DVD-RW drive to open it. This will produce one of the following options: A Message - INSERT A DISC - If the disk is missing, or maybe not placed in the correct drive: Find the open tray and place your disk in it. Check the number on the monitor-surround is the same as the number on the computer cage. If not, move it to the corresponding machine. If you do not have a disk with you - Click the link: Help me choose a disc to help in your choices of which is the one for you to buy from the Enquiry desk.
How To Use A USB Flash Memory Stick
Insert the memory stick into a USB port. Found on the right top corner of the keyboard, and also at the top right of the computer, below the work surface. When the machine has found your USB memory stick, this dialogue box opens to show the drive letter assigned, usually drive (E:). Click on the Open folder to view files option. If this does not happen, check the machine you have plugged the memory stick into has the same number as the screen number you are using if not move the USB stick - else seek advice from staff. To open a file stored on the memory stick: double-click the My Computer icon, found on the top left side of the desktop screen. This opens up a new window with all available drives listed. Double-click on the icon that says: Removable Disk (E:).This will open up the root folder on the memory stick. Double-click on a file icon to open it in a program pane. If the file does not open, the software required is unavailable on that machine! Alternatively, double-click on a folder to open up sub-folders to find the file. Saving Your Work – Not Using The Drag-And-Drop Facility To save work from within a program like MS Word, click the Save icon found in the menu bar in the program, or click Save from the File/Office dropdown list. If the file has been saved previously elsewhere, like your home folder, use the Save As option from the dropdown list to select the Removable Disk (E:). Keep, or add a filename, and select which version of the software you need to save to – If you do not have Office 2007 on the machine you are going to use the file, save it to the earlier version Word 97-2003. Now click the Save button found on the right hand side of the dialogue box. REMOVAL: Click on the green arrow, bottom right of the screen. Click on the Safely remove USB message which pops up - then wait for the message box to say it is safe to take the memory stick out - only then click OK and remove the stick. Hasty removal of the USB stick could result in the loss of your work!

☺ A New pane with the instruction to: Drag files to
this folder to add them to the disc. Treat this as the Destination folder for the Drag-andDrop procedure described on page 2 above . If there is enough space on the disk, files will be automatically written to the disk as you drag them, or save to them. Prepare this blank disc: A disk is in the drive but it is not, as yet, formatted. Click on the Show formatting options link and then Choose from the format options. ONLY choose Mastered if you are handing work in, or archiving files. If you are not sure which is best for your session, READ the advice “Which CD or DVD format should I choose?” If you are going to use the disk on an old operating system, it may be wise to change the version to the appropriate one for your operating system as advised in the Change Version link which advises which version works for what! Type in a title for the disk and click Next. This will format the disk. When it is formatted you can follow the Drag and Drop instructions shown above ☺.
