Preschool-Kindergarten Camp
Preschool-Kindergarten Camp operates on a daily schedule similar to the
CDS preschool during the school year. Throughout the day, students will
enjoy morning and afternoon snack, morning and afternoon meetings,
outdoor time, lunch, nap, art activities and much more. Here is an
overview of the themes interwoven into every camp that children will
explore during each two-week session:
• Farm and Garden: participants will spend time getting acquainted
with our friendly chickens and our two resident sheep, Lucky and
JoJo. Children will collect eggs from the farm for group cooking
projects and have lots of opportunities to grow flowers and other
organic fruits and vegetables in the garden.
• Song and Dance: children will sing, dance and play musical
instruments. Folk songs, modern music and classical music may be
introduced. Children will have opportunities for playing drums, string
and wind instruments. Stretching, yoga and dance parties are often
included in this camp.
• Sports and Games: campers will learn new games and sports with
an emphasis on cooperation. A wide range of indoor and outdoor
activities will be introduced such as active games that include balls,
running and jumping, individual games using the balance beam, quiet
games like puzzles, stretching and yoga, and team games.
In addition, each camp will include activities surrounding a theme
particular to that session:
Session I, Animal Kingdom: come participate in
bug hunts throughout our gardens, study the
food chain, and act out your favorite animal’s
behaviors as we examine the exciting diversity of
creatures in the animal kingdom.
Session II, Music and Movement: join us for
making instruments out of found objects, creating
songs to celebrate our feelings, dancing till the floor heats up and finding
ways to incorporate music into our everyday lives.

stamps from around the globe as we complete a whirlwind tour of world
cultures by exploring art, food and much more from select countries and
continents.
Session IV, Living Green: sustainable lifestyles, here we come!
Campers will learn the dynamics of our physical environment through
activities focused on water usage, rain forests, pollution and recycling.
Session V, The Working World: time to study the world of grown-ups as
we learn what parents do during the day, from homemakers to firemen to
teachers, and find out how communities are created from individuals.

a specific programmatic theme such as Broadway Wonders, Animal
Trackers or Rock Band Land. Additionally, campers will also have daily
morning and afternoon activity choices centered on the following

range of art techniques. Field trips may include visiting Creativity
Explored, San Francisco MOMA, Yerba Buena and other photo and

astronauts, knights and Jedi-Knights,
fairies, cowboys, and ballerinas to Rock
Band Land; the land where kids rule!
Together with
experienced musicians Brian Gorman
(Tartufi) and Marcus Stoesz (Paper
Airplanes), we’ll form a rock band, create an original rock song, and
get crazy with fun music and performance related games and
activities. Each day the rockers will have a chance to smash and
bash on the drums, shred on guitar, dance on the keys, and sing
and scream into the microphones. No experience necessary, just
the desire to rock out! Parents will be invited to a performance of
the band's song at the end of the session. Additional $20 materials
fee. More info at rockbandland.org. Come join if you’re ready to
rock!
Bug Lovers, Session IV

fascinating and fun world of bugs using
art projects, books, videos, crafts, bug
hunts, observation, scientific tools,
movement games and even a tiny taste
of bug cuisine. Bug Lovers will cater to
everyone from Bug Beginners to Insect
Experts, so come grab your magnifying glass as we set out on
exciting bug hunts to the garden and bower leaving no stone or
stump unturned. We'll be both opening our brains and rolling-up
our sleeves as we dig in and uncover the real dirt on bugs!

Hairspray, The Wiz, The Sound of
Music and Annie. We’ll practice
choreography to go with the songs and perform them at the end of
the session. Not ready for center stage? No problem—we also
need backstage help with costumes and sound!
Caves to Skyscrapers, Session V
Another camp based on CDS’s popular
after school building clubs, Caves to
Skyscrapers offers students the
chance to construct their own paper
mache caves, sugar cube igloos and
cardboard castles. We’ll be working as

endless domino chain and turn the structure into a billowing fun-
filled desert tent. So join us if you’re ready to get your hands dirty

Elementary Summer Choices Camp
Session V
Ever wanted to be in the
movies? Now you can! This
class is for kids who are expert
moviemakers and beginners,

use their imagination to think
up a movie. They learn how to
storyboard their ideas, create
costumes and props, plan for special effects and even do simple
stunts! They put it all together and create a finished movie! CDS
today… Hollywood tomorrow! Each student will receive a DVD copy
of their movie to bring home.

Summer in the City Camp features explorations of the city and small
group collaborations for incoming 5th - 10th graders.

spice shops with daily trips such as the Ferry Building, Chinatown and
the Outer Sunset that lead to Asian style cooking projects back on
campus in our environmental education kitchen. Campers will get the
chance to taste and utilize ingredients such as ginger, scallion, tofu,
cucumber, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, shitake
mushrooms, star anise, dashi, miso and chili sauces. We’ll perfect dishes
like marbled tea eggs, miso soup, honey & miso-glazed salmon, fried rice
omelets, wontons, dumplings and even sweet rice flour dessert balls, so
bring your appetite and prepare to become a master chef
San Francisco Snapshots w/ Vanessa, Session II
Explore the city through the medium of photography with an emphasis on
discovering and documenting urban dwellers living sustainable lifestyles
in San Francisco. Students will learn about the basic mechanics of
photography, photography as art, photojournalism and portrait
photography. We’ll take daily trips to various neighborhoods in the city,
searching out green San Francisco in its community gardens, its natural

also create printed photo albums showcasing our work and, if time
allows, produce our own photography exhibit on campus.Do you like to
write poetry? Have you ever tried writing song lyrics?
Rock Band Rebels w/ Terry & Ryan, Session III
Back for its second year, Rock Band brings music lovers together to form
a band, write and rehearse music, plan and organize a concert, develop
and create CD art and flyers and record a song. There’s something for
everyone, not just performers. We’ll break up into three teams:
performance, design and marketing. Some of us will learn to play a song,
some will develop an album cover, logo and t-shirts, and others will
organize and market a concert. We’ll be working hard every day as we
have just two weeks to produce an album and perform a concert. We’ll
also host professionals from all over San Francisco to help make this
happen, including professional sound engineers, music producers, indie
rock band leaders and more. If interested, please email Terry at
terrya@cds-sf.org with the following information:
Do you play and own an instrument? Which one and for how long?
Do you know how to use any art-generating computer applications like
Adobe?
Do you enjoy photography? Do you have a camera?
Do you like to write poetry? Have you ever tried writing song lyrics?
