Specific Guidance notes
Professorial fellowship applications can only be made using the ESRC Fellowship electronic
form available at http://eforms.esrc.ac.uk. The complete application must be returned
electronically by noon on 31 March 2003. Applications received after that time will not be
accepted.
Potential applicants should note that in order to use electronic application an institution needs to
have agreed with the ESRC, in advance, a registered despatcher. Arrangements for registration
of despatchers on behalf of institutions are described at: http://eforms.esrc.ac.uk/registra.htm.
Most institutions are already registered. If yours is not please ask for registration action to be
completed in good time before you wish to make the application - ESRC recommends at
least one working week in advance.

Do not enter Mentor as not applicable.

In title of fellowship enter "Professorial fellowship" followed by title of proposed work.
Amount requested is calculated by the information you will provide later in the application.
Duration- Awards are to be made for a period of three years. You need to enter the length of
time you are applying for and the start date of the award. The form will automatically calculate
the end date.

Monitoring the Professorial Fellowship scheme:
Mission. The mission of the ESRC is:
a) To promote and support, by any means, high quality basic, strategic and applied research and
related postgraduate training in the social sciences;
b) to advance knowledge and provide trained social scientists which meet the need of users and
beneficiaries, thereby contributing to the economic competitiveness of the United kingdom, the
effectiveness of public services and policy and the quality of life;
c) to provide advice on and disseminate knowledge and promote public understanding of the
social sciences.
Please indicate to which of the above Mission areas the research would make its primary
contribution.

Fellow's salary costs: all entries should be at current rates. Expected salary increments should be
taken into account, but possible national pay increases should NOT be included. Where
standard scales are not used, ESRC will require a copy of the scale.

All items requested must be fully justified in the breakdown of expenses in section 11.
Along with usual exceptional items applicants should put in this section any costs they wish to
claim for associated with a studentship. This should include maintenance award, RTSG,
overseas fieldwork and fees. The average total cost for a studentship this year is £12,000.
If you are also claiming for a research assistant please enter costs in this section; they should
include RA's grade, spinal point, increment date, starting salary excluding London and other
allowances, London allowance, other allowances, combined superannuation and national

insurance. Indirect costs associated with the RA may also be claimed in this section subject to
the usual threshold.

This section should summarise the support offered by the institution towards the cost of the
fellowship.

Breakdown of Section 10: Please justify each item of expenditure requested. Items which are
not fully justified will not be considered for funding.

Other commitments: You should state clearly any additional activity you will be involved in
during the period of the fellowship.

CV: This section is not stored in the e-form. Before you complete the e-form, use a word
processor to prepare your CV in accordance with the guidance below, and save it as a supporting
file.
The CV should give the full name, date of birth, degrees and post-graduate qualifications
(including the class and subject of the award), academic and professional posts held since
graduation, a list of the most relevant and recent publications, and a record of research funded
by the ESRC and other bodies. Details of any international posts should also be included. The
CV must not exceed ten pages of A4. This will be an important document in the
assessment of the application.
The name of the supporting file containing the fellow's CV must be entered.

applicant, title of project, funding body approached, amount sought, length of project, likely
decision date.

If you hold a current ESRC award, provide as a supporting file either a formal progress report if
the award requires one, or a two page account of progress.
State whether this proposal is a re-submission.

Please provide a clear timetable for the project and the intended progress of the professorial
fellowship through different stages of work. The work of the PhD student and the RA (if
applicable) should also be included in this section. This helps referees assess the proposed
approach, and facilitates monitoring.

Non-Technical summary: please provide a non-technical summary of the research. This will be
particularly useful to Panel members who will not necessarily be from your disciplinary

this in mind.

All costs for cataloguing and preparing data for archiving which will be claimed from the ESRC
must be included in section 10 of the e-form and must be incurred during the award period.

Please name four nominated referees, two of whom must be based at institutions overseas.
Applicants must check with their nominated referees that they will be prepared to review
their proposal. It is not necessary to name user referees, so please type overseas referees
in the user boxes.

This section should be completed by the head of the proposed department which will be
supporting the Fellowship.
The ESRC is a co-supporter of the Concordat on research careers. Please outline under the
headings (i) – (iv)the institutional arrangements for supporting research staff.
(i) Please note institutional or departmental initiatives for encouraging high quality research
capacity.
(ii) Please note any institutional funding for supporting staff research time. Indicate how the
fellowship will complement these arrangements.
(iii) Please outline the resources the Professorial Fellow will have access to within the institution
and the department. Where resources take the form of contribution in kind, or through access
or other assistance rather than financial resources, details should also be given. Value for money
is taken into account in the assessment of research proposals. A letter confirming any co-
funding in collaborative ventures should accompany the application.
(iv) Please outline how the Professorial fellowship will develop the applicant's career. If the
applicant is an established member of staff at your istiution, state how the concentrated research
time will be of additional benefit in comparison to the applicant's usual position. If the applicant
usually has no institutional base, state what the benefits of working within your institution will
be.
