HOW TO JOIN THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE … … and help run the Association
LOCAL PEOPLE RUN THE ASSOCIATION. WHY NOT JOIN THEM? The Association is run largely by local residents for local residents. If you feel that local people should have a say in how organisations in their neighbourhood operate, think about becoming more involved with Maryhill Housing Association. We are always looking for enthusiastic people to join the Management Committee. WHAT IS THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE? The Management Committee is a group of local people who make the important decisions about how the Association is run. HOW CAN I BECOME A COMMITTEE MEMBER? Each year there is an Annual General Meeting at which members have the opportunity to either stand themselves for election or put forward someone else for election to the Management Committee. All you have to do to become a member is buy a £1 share. Committee members come from four areas:
Eastpark Garrioch Ruchill Village/Burgh Hall
There are 16 places available on the Committee for local residents. Currently this is made up of four people from each area. WHAT DOES THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE DO? Lots of things, including:
Representing as a group the views of the whole community. Agreeing policies and plans for such things as building new houses and management and maintenance of properties. Agreeing the future direction and purpose of the Association. Employing staff and delegating management duties to them. Setting the annual spending budget.
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE? No, although it helps if you are already active in the community and have some experience of sitting on a Committee. However don’t let lack of experience put you off! WILL I BE GIVEN ANY HELP? Yes! You will be given help, information and advice about the background to the Association and your role as a Committee Member. You will also have the opportunity to go on training courses and to attend conferences paid for by the Association. In the early days you will be given a “buddy” to show you the ropes and explain how it all works. DO COMMITTEE MEMBERS GET PAID? No. Committee work is voluntary, although we do pay for childcare and travel expenses. The work may be unpaid, but it is very rewarding. Many of our members have picked up new skills and interests as a result of being on the Committee. They have also made new friends. WHEN DOES THE COMMITTEE MEET? The Committee normally meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. An agenda and reports for the meeting are sent to Committee members the week before. The meetings begin at 6.30pm and normally finish by 9.00pm. CAN I TALK TO SOMEBODY ABOUT IT? Yes. You can speak or write to:
Lorain MacKinnon, Chairperson of the Management Committee or Bobby Pollock, Community Development Officer, whose job involves working with local residents or Willy Briody, Director.
All of these people can be contacted at the Association’s offices at 45 Garrioch Road, Maryhill. Call them on 946 2466.
