Undocking Your Laptop Notes: o If the laptop does not have power from a battery, the laptop will turn off when you undock it and all unsaved data will be lost. o If you do not use one of the two ways listed below to undock your laptop, you will lose data and the laptop may not recover normal operation for several minutes and possibly, not at all. o Do not put the laptop into standby mode and then undock your laptop. o See diagram above, Docking control base controls and indicators, to locate controls. 5. Undock your laptop by doing one of the following: Via Keyboard (recommended by Dell): 1. START > Eject PC. 2. Wait for the computer to go into Standby Mode. 3. Slide "Eject/Locking Lever" in the direction of the arrow. 4. Remove computer from docking station. Via Docking Control Base: 1. Press the "Undock Request Button" on the docking control base. 2. Wait for the green docking light to turn off. 3. Slide "Eject/Locking Lever" in the direction of the arrow. 4. Remove computer from docking station. III. Docking Your Laptop 0. Save your work, close all open files and exit all applications. 1. Shut down your system. 2. Center and place laptop on docking control base. 3. Align ridges on top of the laptop with the ridges on top of the docking device. 4. The guide rails on docking control base will connect with the grooves on the bottom of the laptop when both are in alignment. 5. Push the laptop toward the docking device gently but firmly with your thumbs. 6. You should hear or feel a click as the catch lever locks into place. 7. Once the laptop is powered "on", the green power light on the docking control base should light up. (Note: DO NOT pick up the computer or docking device separately while they are connected to each other because you may damage the connectors on the computer and the docking device.) IV. Switching Displays When External Monitor is Hooked Up (Note: If an external monitor is attached to the docking device, the docked laptop will project its screen image to the external monitor.) 0. To switch image to laptop display or both external monitor and laptop display, press . V. Checking Battery Charge 0. When Laptop is powered via WALL OUTLET: a. Hold pointer over laptop icon in system tray. b. Aqua colored lightning bolt on icon indicates unit is plugged into a wall outlet and battery is charging. c. Tool Tip will pop up indicating charge level. 1. When Laptop is powered via BATTERY: . Hold pointer over laptop icon in system tray. a. Battery icon indicates unit is not plugged into a wall outlet. The battery is the power source and the blue color in the battery icon indicates charge level. b. Tool Tip will pop up indicating charge level. . 2. On Battery Itself Follow the directions in the next section, "Remove the battery from the battery bay" a. Press battery test button, which is the white dot next to the five small bars on the rear panel of the battery. b. The bars will light up indicating amount of charge remaining. VI. Removing the Battery From the Battery Bay 0. Save your work, close all open files and exit all applications. 1. If the computer is docked, undock it. 2. Connect computer to electrical outlet or place computer in hibernate mode (START > Shut Down > Hibernate (if Hibernate is not enabled see "Hibernate" section below) OR close display). 3. Close display. 4. Either turn computer over or feel for the battery bay latch underneath. 5. Slide latch to side. 6. Pull battery out with other hand. 7. Release latch. VII. Inserting Battery Into the Battery Bay 0. Slide battery firmly into bay. Battery will click to indicate it is fully seated. VIII. Hibernate Feature allows you to turn off laptop and return to same system status when you turn it on later, meaning that the same programs will be running and the same files will be open as when you turned the laptop off. (Note: If the laptop is left in a "hibernate" state for more than 3 hours, the laptop will lock up. A password will have to be typed in to unlock the laptop.) 0. To enable: . START > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options. i. The "Power Options Properties" window appears. ii. Click on the "Hibernate" tab. iii. iv. 1. . i. ii. 2. . Check "Enable Hibernate Support." Click OK. To disable: Perform steps 1-3 above. Uncheck "Enable Hibernate Support." Click OK. To use: When you shut down your computer, the "Hibernate" option appears in pull down menu of the "Shut Down Windows" window. IX. Changing Bay Modules 0. Double-click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon on the system tray. 1. "Unplug or Eject Hardware" window appears. 2. Click device to be removed. 3. The "Stop a Hardware Device" window appears. 4. Click OK. 5. The "Safe to Remove Hardware" window appears. 6. Click OK. 7. Remove the bay module from the laptop. . Slide latch on bottom of computer to side. i. Pull module out with other hand. ii. Release latch. 8. Insert another module. . Slide module firmly into bay. Module will click to indicate it is fully seated. X. Recovering from a Computer or Application Freeze (Ending a Task) 0. Start the Task Manager by doing either of the following: Hitting the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys then choosing Task Manager from the Windows Security pop-up box. Right clicking on your tasks bar and choosing Task Manager from the menu. 1. Select the application that is stalling your computer and hit the End Task button (Warning: Any unsaved data from this application will be lost). 2. Close the Task Manager.
