CRITERIA FOR ENTRIES

1.      Books must be original and published in English.

2.      If book is a revision or update of a previous book, a substantial amount of material must be new.

3.      Books must be published in 2008.

4.     Books may be submitted by the editor, publisher, author, agent or other authorized person.

5.      This year for the first time, publishers and authors will be able to enter books into one of 10 permanent categories,
        from American Cooking to Writing & Literature. The Book Committee reserves the right to reassign a book to a
        different category if appropriate.

6.      Book of the Year will be chosen from the winners of each of those categories. The photography category also will
        continue, and the Book Awards committee will choose a book for entry into the Hall of Fame.

HOW TO ENTER

1.      Complete and sign an entry form for each submission. Choose among these categories:

                Baking and Desserts                                       General Cooking
                Cooking from a Professional Point of View                 Healthy Focus
                International                                             Writing and Literature
                Reference and Scholarship                                 Single Subject
                Beverage                                                  American Cooking

2.      Attach check or money order in the amount of $100 per submission, payable to The James Beard                Foundation.
        Tax ID Number: 132752 108.

3.      Include six (6) copies of book. (Books cannot be returned.)

4.      Books must be received by MONDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2008.

JUDGING

Service or contribution to The James Beard Foundation has no effect on the outcome of The James Beard Foundation Awards
and is not a requirement for submitting an entry or being considered as an award candidate.

Judges are editors, authors, journalists, educators and other food and visual professionals who are leaders in their field and
who have not substantially contributed to a culinary book published in 2008.

NOTIFICATION

1.      Nominees will be announced on March 23, 2009, and will be notified via e-mail, please make sure that you provide
        Author’s email address.

2.      Winners will be announced on May 4, 2009, at The James Beard Foundation Awards
        Gala at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, New York City.
