Pulpwood is measured to a 5-inch top diameter.
Hardwood sawlogs are measured to a 9-inch top diameter (minimum 11-inch dbh).
Softwood sawlogs are measured to a 7-inch top diameter (minimum 9 inch dbh).

Crew members:
                                                   INSTRUCTIONS

1. Establish the plot center by following compass and pace instructions. Mark the plot center (with
flagging, a wire stake, or other means).

2. Record the number of plots DONE and crew member names on the Field Tally Sheet.

3. Select a “start tree” for tree count. Use the Penny Gauge to determine which trees are “in” and
which trees are “out”. Proceed in a clockwise direction from the start tree. Do not miss trees!

4. Take the following data for each tree: tree count, species, pulpwood height, and sawtimber height
(if tree has a large enough diameter, 9” softwoods and 11” hardwoods).

5. Record the number of pulpsticks and number of eight-foot sawlogs (for each species) using a dot
tally. Each dot and slash in the dot tally represents one tree. For example: a red maple sawtimber
tree (over 11” dbh) has 2 sawlogs and 3 three pulpsticks.

6. Follow the specifications for pulpwood and sawlogs (bottom of form).

7. Always round down to the nearest pulpstick or eight-foot log.
