A quarter century
After 26 years since Richard Stallman founded the GNU Project, Open Source
Software has matured into a real market force, adopted by business giants,
gouvernments and milions of individuall users. What Linus Torvald started in 1991
is now the no. 2 operating sistem worldwide and growing. The leading market
research and analysis firm, IDC. suggests in a recent study that two-thirds of IT
executives polled are considering using GNU/Linux on the desktop, and 72% are
considering using it for servers.

Open Source Software and Linux are now present everywhere in desktops,
servers, handheld devices or supercomputers. Along with whidescale adoption,
the initial credo of Open Source is kept alive by milions of volunteers worldwide.
An EU study concluded that almost two-thirds of FLOSS software is still written by
individuals; firms contribute about 15% and other institutions another 20%. The OS
code base has been doubling every 18-24 months over the past years, and this
growth is projected to continue for several more years.
