How To Bring the Project to Your Campus
                               Hunger in Darfur
In addition to the 450,000 people who have been killed in Darfur, reports by the World
Food Programme, the United Nations, and the Coalition for International Justice show
that 2.5 million people have been driven from their homes, and 3.5 million are now
hungry. Without shelter, the ability to gather food safely, or the ownership of livestock,
hunger is now one of the largest threats in the region. The Paper Plate Project attempts
to create awareness of this humanitarian crisis.

This guide outlines everything a student needs to know to implement this project on his or
her campus. If you are interested in undertaking the Paper Plate Project at your school,

The Paper Plate Project on Your Campus

              PHASE 1: Collect Letters on Plates!
Raise awareness and give students the tools to take action! Have students write letters to
Congress on the surface of a paper plate, symbolizing the dire reality of hunger in Darfur.
 Edit the sample letter so that it addresses the member of Congress who represents your
  campus. You can table with the plates, or distribute them along with sample letters,
                            flyers, and a way to return the plate.

                                     You will need:

   •   Paper plates! You can buy stacks of thin plates at a low cost (it’s often the
       easiest to write on the cheapest plates!)
   •   Stickers (see template in this guide) – stick them on the back of each plate.
   •   Sample letters (included)
   •   Flyers – something for students to take with them – information on Darfur, how to
       stay involved, etc. (included)
   •   Be sure you tell students the name of the member(s) of Congress who represents
       your district.

              Get students to write letters! Here are a few ideas:

   •   Table in a visible area on campus, i.e. student center, quad, high-traffic walkway,
       etc.
   •   Set up a table in a dining area during busy lunch or dinner hours.
   •   Bring plates to all relevant events – big events on campus, Hillel programs,
       volunteer opportunities, Darfur programming, etc.
   •   Pass plates around in your classes. Ask professors if you can make
       announcements in relevant courses.
   •   Work with the Residential Life staff to distribute plates in dorms or leave a stack
       with Resident Assistants.

                                    Tips on Tabling

   •   If you use a table, make sure it looks attractive and professional – make a good
       impression. Materials on the table and large posters or signs help project your
       presence into a flow of people and help get attention, but it is up to the tablers
       to actually do the outreach. See the above list of materials to have at your table.
   •   Use the table as a base, not as a wall to hide behind. Get the more confident
       tablers to “float” out into the traffic flow to reach more people. Don’t be afraid to
       approach people.
   •   Tablers should be warm and friendly and have a good initial pitch to get passing
       students to stop to write a letter – such as, “Hi. Do you have a minute to help end
       the hunger and genocide taking place in Darfur, Sudan?”

Great. My name is ________ and I work with Hillel. We are generating letters to our
members of Congress asking them to increase funding for aid and peacekeeping forces
for Darfur. Since 2003, more than 450,000 people have been killed in Darfur, and 2.5
million people have been displaced. And as the conflict rages on, more than 3.5 million
people are experiencing hunger and are at risk of dying from hunger related diseases.

Would you be willing to write a letter to your member of Congress?


       Phase 2: Display the Plates on Campus

  You’ve collected tons of letters on plates – how do you make an impact on campus?
 Find a visible way to display the plates that will attract the attention of your community.
     In doing so, you will raise awareness about the situation in Darfur and create (or
                      reinforce) a visible activist presence on campus.

          How should you display the plates? Here are a few ideas:

   •    Tape the plates to a wall – student center, centrally located building, etc.
   •    Attach the plates to string with clothespins, and hang them across a quad or
        student center.
   •    Line up the plates in a path around campus, or in a circle surrounding a central
        building or area.
   •    Set a table in a visible area with the empty plates.

      Phase 3: Deliver the Plates to Congress
•   Look up the member of Congress that represents the district in which your school
    is located. This can be done very easily on the internet using websites like
    www.vote-smart.org.
•   Locate the district office of your member of Congress.
•   Gather a few students who have been involved in the project, and bring all of
    the plates (in boxes, shopping bags, etc) to the district office.
•   You may wish to call the office beforehand and let them know you’re coming. If
    you can, schedule an appointment with a member of the staff to talk about the
    project and further pressure the Representative to actively support an end to the
    genocide in Darfur.

                 observance of the DarfurFast! Hand out paper plates
                 while collecting pledges to fast, or bring the plates to
                                  fast-related events!

        Writing Letters to Congress:
        What to say on your plate
                            Some general tips:

•   Thank your member of Congress for his/her attention to and support of this
    issue
•   Talk about what you are doing on your campus – make it local!
•   Be clear, concise, and formal. Also, watch your spelling and grammar.
•   Be sure that your letter is legible.
•   Support your request with relevant facts (see below)
•   Call your member of Congress to action. Include a specific request.


            You may wish to include the following information:

•   The Genocide in Darfur began in 2003. Since then, over 450,000 people have
    lost their lives, and over 2.5 million people are displaced.
•   According to reports from the World Food Programme, the United Nations,
    and the Coalition for International Justice, over 3.5 million people are hungry
    as a result of the genocide in Darfur,
•   Darfurians cannot access food because they are forced out of their homes,
    they lose their livestock, and they often risk being attacked when attempting
    to gather food.
•   In order to end the genocide in Darfur, an international peacekeeping force
    must be deployed. The current African Union forces are underfunded and
    incapable of stopping the violence.
•   ASK your member of Congress to support increased funding for Darfur
•   ASK your member of Congress to demand that the administration use all
    diplomatic channels to pressure the Sudanese government to consent to UN
    peacekeepers in Darfur.

               Raising Awareness Through
                    Media Coverage
Education is the number one tool to combat ignorance and apathy, and the media is
the best way to educate a diverse population. By working with the media, you will be
able to educate the greater population about the conflict in Darfur, inform the public
about your campus activities, and encourage others to take action.

Three Tips for Getting Media Coverage

   •   Start Early. Don’t wait until the day before your event to call reporters. The sooner
       you are able to guarantee reporters a great story, the more likely they are to
       cover the event.
   •   It’s all about the pitch. Be sure to talk to reporters on the phone, not just over e-
       mail, to pitch them on the story. You can tell the story about your campus
       activities to address the hunger and genocide taking place in Darfur. One-on-
       one conversations are more compelling than just sending a news advisory.
   •   Follow up, follow up, follow up! Call reporters to make sure they received the
       advisory, call them the day before to confirm that they’re coming, call them the
       morning of the event, and call them after to the event to make sure they’re
       questions are answered.



   How to Generate On- and Off-Campus Media Coverage for an Event

1. Compile a media list or update your existing media list.
Update a list of local media at http://dir.yahoo.com/News_and_media/. Make sure to
add campus press to the list as well. Call each outlet to determine who is the best
contact for your news advisory (i.e. international, hunger, poverty, or special interest
editors). If no one has covered the conflict in Darfur, and for most TV and radio stations,
you will send the advisory to the Assignment or News editor. Make sure to get a contact
name (first and last) direct phone, email, and fax for each contact.

2. Write, e-mail, and fax (mail if you do not have access to a fax machine) a news
advisory to invite the media to the event. You should send the advisory at least 3 days in
advance of the event you wish to have covered (i.e. the unveiling of your paper plate
display on campus, or the delivery of your plates to your Congressional district office). If
you e-mail the advisory, include it in the text, not as an attachment. The advisory should
have a catchy title (think of it as your ideal headline) and offer the basic information
including the who, what, when, and where of the event. It is critical that you note the
specific location where the media should show up. If you are having a kickoff event,
direct the media to the kickoff site, and also include a nearby work site where the media
can go for some action photos.

3. Call the media to confirm that they have received the news advisory the day you send
it. The phone call also offers an opportunity to personally invite them to the event, answer
any questions they may have, and to get them excited. You should also call the morning
of the event, generally between 8am and 9am while the editorial team is meeting, to
confirm that the outlet is planning to send someone.

4. Write your press release (the full story you’d like to see in the paper the next day) and
develop media packets to give the media who attend your Paper Plates for Darfur event
(or another Darfur programming event). The packet should include the press release and
a brochure or flyer about your group.

5. Have one person designated to greet and speak with the media.

6. After the event, fax and email the press release, and call print and radio outlets that
did not attend the event (they may still be interested in covering the event).

7. Clip the newspaper article (article and masthead) and add to your organizational
scrapbook. Also, send a copy to Beth Kurtz at bkurtz@hillel.org or fax to 202-449-6608.




                     Guide to Writing a Letter to the Editor (LTE)

One of the easiest ways to educate people about an issue is through the Letters to the
Editor (LTE) section of your local paper. LTEs are easy to write and have a good chance
of being printed – plus, you are able to communicate your exact message. In addition,
the LTE page is one of the most widely read pages in the newspaper, so you can use LTEs
to get your message out to lots of people.

Guide to LTE Writing:
Most newspapers state the policies and instructions for submitting LTEs on the paper's
opinion page. Make sure you follow their procedures exactly. Here are five easy tips to
increase your chances of publishing:

1) Keep it short and simple. Short letters are more likely to be printed so try to keep yours
under or near 250 words. This doesn’t leave much room to wander so stick to the main
issue – the conflict in Darfur.

2) Make it relate. LTEs are more likely to be printed if they reference something the
newspaper has recently published, either a recent story about the same issue or a
related issue. For example: “I saw your article on X (“Article Name,” date it was printed)
and felt the need to respond.”

3) Show, don’t tell. When possible, give facts or examples. Don’t use rhetoric - be specific
about your arguments.

4) Express emotion. With LTEs it’s fine to express feelings of frustration – this makes the
letter more compelling. You can do this by using personal experience as well.

5) Follow up. After you submit your letter, call the editor in charge of letters and ask if and
when they will print it. Continue to follow up periodically until your letter is printed.
Newspapers receive more letters than they can print, so your letter is more likely to be
used if you take the time to contact them.

6) Document your work. Report the LTEs you generate to Beth Kurtz at bkurtz@hillel.org or
fax to 202-449-6608.

If we get enough, we can compile a scrap book and send them to the entire senate!

                Sample Letter to the Editor
I was frustrated after reading XXX’s article “XXX” about the conflict in Darfur, Sudan.
Since the Sudanese government sponsored conflict began in 2003, more than 450,000
people have lost their lives, while 2.5 million people have been displaced – forced from
their homes. Millions of survivors are now living in refugee camps where there are limited
food and medical supplies. Throughout the region, more than 3.5 million people are
experiencing hunger and are at risk of dying from hunger-related diseases.

As Americans, we cannot passively sit by and allow this to happen. We must urge our
federal politicians, including (names of local senators and representative), to do
everything they can to assure that the peacekeeping forces in Darfur are fully funded
and that humanitarian aid reaches all those in need. We must also demand that the
Administration continues to pressure the international community to plan for a United
Nations takeover of the African Union mission in Darfur.

Please join me in contacting (names of local senators and representative), and making
sure that we stop the starvation and genocide taking place in Darfur, Sudan before
others needlessly die.
