NAME How to Use the Software: Curriculum Mapper™ Workshop #3 Participant Guide 1 Creating a New Curriculum Map 1. To create a new curriculum map, log on to Curriculum Mapper™. After you have logged on, click on “Click here to enter the Curriculum Mapper.” 2. In the blue navigation bar at the left of the screen, put the cursor on Maps. From the submenu that appears, click on My Maps. 3. The My Maps-Summary page will appear which shows any maps that already created for the selected year. If no maps have been created, the screen below will appear. Note: If maps have been created a map, the following screen will be displayed. 4. Click on the Add New Month link at the top of the page. The “Add/Edit” screen will appear in a new window. (If your computer does not have Java installed, the “Simple Edit” screen will appear.) 5. Use the pull-down menus to select the course, year, and the month to be created. If there is an existing map for the month selected, Curriculum Mapper will display the existing map. If no map has been created, you will see a blank screen as shown in the figure on the right. Note: You cannot begin adding anything to a map until a course, year and month have been selected. 2 Using the Spell Checker Curriculum Mapper™ includes a spell check feature, which is available on the “Add/Edit” screen. To use the built-in spell checker, click the “Spell Check” button (ABC icon) on the top of the “Add/Edit” screen. This feature will check only the active field (where your cursor is blinking). To check another field, move your cursor to another field and click the Spell Check button again. 1. Save your map before you use the Spell Checker. 2. The Spell Checker only checks the spelling for the column your cursor is in. To check all columns click in each column and then click on the “Spell Check” button. 3. Save your map when finished checking the spelling. Maps Summary Page When you click on My Maps under Maps in the blue navigation bar, the menu on the right will appear. From here you can Edit, View, Copy, and/or Delete your maps through the pull-down menu on the right side of the screen under Month Action Editing an Existing Month 1. Click on the triangle under Month Action (see diagram above) and make sure Edit is highlighted. 2. Click on the Month that you want to edit. 3. This will take you to the Add/Edit page. School Overview The School Overview page allows you to view the entire curriculum map from any course and teacher in your school or district. To access this page, put the cursor on Maps in the blue navigation menu at the left of the screen. In the submenu that appears, click on School Overview. This will bring up the School Overview page. 3 1. You may sort the maps on this page by simply clicking once on a column heading. The screen will reload. 2. You may switch between schools in your district by choosing the desired school in the drop-down list at the top of the page. 3. You may choose to see only master maps by clicking the Show Master Maps Only link at the top of the page. The page will reload with only master maps displayed. 4. To view the curriculum map for a particular course and teacher, click on the name of the course. A new window will open with the complete curriculum map in table format. Integrating Standards Standards are integrated directly into your curriculum maps through the “Add/Edit” screen. In your maps, you can indicate if a standard has been has been introduced, developed, or reinforced in your curriculum. 1. On the “Add/Edit” screen, click once on the “State/Local Standards” tab. Use the pull-down menus to choose the standards, subject area, and grade. Your state’s standards will appear in the top half of the screen. Click on the “key” icon next to the standard to see the goals and sub goals that accompany that standard. 2. Put the cursor in your map where you would like to indicate a connection with a state standard. In the listing of standards, find the standard you would like to integrate into your map. Click in the checkbox next to that standard. From the pull-down menu next to the checkbox, choose introduced, developed, or reinforced, depending on how this standard is connected with your curriculum. 3. Then, click the button. The “Standards” icon will appear in your map where your cursor was flashing. You may attached as many standards into your map as many times as you wish. When another teacher views your curriculum map and puts the cursor on a “Standards” icon, s/he will see an overview of how many items you checked and from which category. If s/he clicks on the “Standards” icon, a window will appear that lists the details of each item you checked. 4. If you need to edit the standards in your map, click once on the “Standards” icon of the item you wish to edit. The standards associated with that item will appear in the Standards window. Make any changes (check and un-check any items as you wish), button to apply the changes. To delete a standards icon, position then click the your cursor to the right of the “Standards” icon and use the “delete” or “backspace” key to delete the icon. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. Remember there is no undo option. 4 Copying and Pasting Standards After you have inserted standards into a map, you may wish to copy those standards to another part of the map, or even a different course and/or month. To copy/paste standards you have inserted into your map, do the following: 1. Insert a standard(s) into your map, following the usual steps, outlined above. 2. Use your mouse to click once on a standard icon, . This displays the standards you checked at the top of the screen. . 3. Click once on the Copy Standards icon, 4. Move your cursor to another place in the curriculum map, or use the pull down menus at the top to change the course, month and/or year. . The standards icon will appear at your 5. Click once on the Paste Standards icon, cursor and the standards have been copied. Performing a Basic Search 1. In the blue navigation menu at the left of the screen, put the cursor on Maps. In the submenu that appears, click on Search. This will bring up the Search Curriculum Maps page. 2. Choose the year(s) you would like to search from the box in the upper right. Then click “Select.” The page will reload and you are ready to continue. 3. Choose the school you want to search, or check the box labeled, “All Schools in my District.” 4. Enter a word or phrase into the search field. Curriculum Mapper™ supports the Boolean operators AND and OR (e.g. Shakespeare OR Hamlet). Additionally, you can search for exact phrases by using quotation marks (e.g., “The Merchant of Venice”). 5. If you want to limit your search to only maps of a particular category (e.g. math, world languages, etc.) choose a category from the drop-down list. 5 6. If you want to search only particular grade levels, click the one(s) you want. Hold down the CTRL key (or the APPLE key on a Macintosh) to select multiple grade levels 7. Once you have made all of your selections, click “Go Search.” The Search Results page will appear. This screen contains all courses that match your search. The number of months that match your search is displayed at the top. Any maps that have been designated as “Master Maps” will appear in red. For information on viewing map details, see “Viewing Search Results” (below). 8. To begin a new search, click Back to Search at the top of this screen. This will return you to the Search Curriculum Maps page. 9. To return to the Search Results page, click on the Close Window link at the top of the screen. NOTE: Do not use your browser’s “Back” or “Next” button on this screen, as all browsers will not handle this correctly. Use the links at the bottom of each screen to ensure safe navigation. 6 Printing Maps There are several ways to print your maps. You may want to print all of your maps for the year or just for one particular month. You can choose to print the Web Page view or export your map to Microsoft Word. Printing a Complete Map 1. In the My Maps – Summary page, click on the course title (blue underlined) in the Course column. In the example below, the course is Grade 7 Science. 2. Your map will appear in a popup window. 3. At the top of the screen, click Fit To Screen to format the map so that the entire map is printed out. If you don’t select Fit To Screen, the printer may cut off the right side of your map as in the example below. This will not be the case if your printer is fitted with legal size paper. 4. If you want to print the text of the standards in your map, click on Show Standards. 5. Click on Print Printing one month of a map 1. In the My Maps – Summary page click on the triangle in the Month Action column and select View. 2. Click the month you wish to view. 3. As in the example above, click on Fit To Screen 4. If you want to print the text of the standards in your map, click on Show Standards. 5. Click Print To Convert to Microsoft Word 1. Follow the steps above to view either your complete map or a particular month. 2. Click on the icon. 3. A message will appear informing you that your map is being converted. 7 General Information If you forget your password Although your School Coordinator cannot see your current password, s/he can change it to something new. Contact your School Coordinator to change your password to a known value. Changes take effect instantly. You may also use the AutoPass feature, found on the logon page. Simply supply your name and e-mail address as you originally entered it in Curriculum Mapper™, and your password will be e-mailed to you within minutes. Help and Customer Service Information Customer service and technical support are offered for free to all registered users. You may receive help in many ways. 1. Download a user manual for free from Curriculum Mapper™ website. Once you logon to the system, you are presented with a link to immediately download the user manual in MS Word format (Mac or PC) or PDF format (viewable on any Mac or PC with Adobe Acrobat). 2. Use the online help offered on each screen of Curriculum Mapper™. Simply click on the ? on any page after you are logged onto the system to view help pertaining to that page. 3. E-mail your question to support@westjam.org. Please include your name and Teacher ID. Also include what type of computer you are using (Mac or PC) and the browser you are using (e.g. Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 6.0, etc.). 4. Call technical support between 10:00 AM and 9:00 PM CST. Be prepared to provide your teacher ID. WestJam will never ask you for your password over the phone. In addition, WestJam cannot give you a password over the phone; if you forget your password, a new one may be e-mailed to you or your director of curriculum.
