-------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction: We are going to be talking about one of the most
important things that we can do in life, learning to be content.
It is important because of the PERSONAL and PUBLIC benefit of being
contended.
It Will Benefit Our Personal Life, and it will benefit our Public life
because of our influence or witness.
Complaining and negative people who do not live a contended life make
their self-miserable and other people to.
One of the main things, a discontented person is a bad witness for
Christ. ETC.

I. The Significance Of Being Content
            (Value)
V.11 – Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Webster> happy enough with what one has or is; not desiring something
more or different; satisfied-

This is what the world is looking for. If you could put a price on
contentment and sell it, a person would end up being the richest person
in the world.

So, if you are a contended person today, you are one of the richest
persons on earth.

This is a RARE COMMODITY, but you can be a contented person.

However, it doesn’t come natural. You are not born being a contented
person. You have to LEARN how to be contended.

                                                                          1
Did you notice what Paul said in V.11? Not that I speak in respect of
want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be
content.
Just like Paul had to learn, we have to learn how to be content. We will
notice the secret Paul learned before we get through.

    The Significance Of Being Content

II. The State Of Being Content
V.11 again- Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Notice the words” WHATSOEVER STATE”.
QUESTION: What stare was Paul in? Well, let us notice the
DIFFERENT state that Paul was in.

   A. He Was Content In The State Of Plenty
V.12 – I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound,
every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and
      to be hungry.
Paul was saying that he knew how to be content when he had
plenty. This is the area that most people have problems with.
A lot of people go from a humble spirit to a haughty spirit.

   B. He Was Content In The State Of Poverty
V.12- Paul talks about being abased.
V.12a- I know how to be abased-
Abased- means to live humbly in stricken circumstances.
Paul goes on to say in V.12c, and to suffer needs-
V.12 Last phrase- both to abound and to suffer needs.

   C. He Was Content In The State Of Problems
V.12 – I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound:
      everywhere and in all things-
Question? Where was Paul? Answer: He was in Prison. Etc.

                                                                           2
  D. He Was Content In The State Of Pain
2 Corinthians 12: 7 –And lest I should be exalted above measure
through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a
      thorn in the flesh-

Thorn in the flesh > speaks of Paul having a physical problem
      that was painful.

Paul learned how to be content in the midst of his physical
      suffering.

III. The Sign Of Being Content … V.6 thanksgiving
There is always a sign of contentment in people who are truly contended.

V.6 – Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving-

1 Thessalonians 5: 18 – In every thing give thanks: for this is the will
of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

You can listen to the words that come out of your mouth and tell if you
are contented. If negative words come out of your mouth, it is a good
sign that you are not grateful. If positive words come out of your mouth
it is a good sign that you are grateful.

Complaining, ungrateful people are not contented.

IV. The Secret Of Being Content
  A. The Secret Of Prayer
      1. The Turning Aspect Of Prayer
V.6 – Be careful (anxious) for nothing, but in everything by prayer
      and supplication-
The word CAREFUL means> anxious. So what ever it is that
would cause us to be anxious (anxiety), which would cause us not
to be content, we need to turn that over to the Lord in prayer.

                                                                            3
Now when you turn it over to the Lord that means that you must
release it into God’s care.
This is one aspect of the secret of contentment.

   The Turning Aspect Of Prayer
2. The Trusting Aspect Of Prayer
Another aspect of Paul’s secret of contentment is found in the
trusting aspect of prayer.
You will never turn your problem over to the Lord, if you don’t
trust Him in taking care of it.
I want to mention two things pertaining to trust.

No. 1 – Paul Was Trusting In God’s Providential Hand In His
Life
Listen to V. 11 again- I have learned in whatsoever state I am,
there with to be content.
What Paul was saying in essence was that he had learned to
accept every circumstance, because he believed that God was in
charge of life’s arrangements for His children.
God Arranges The Places In Life
God Arranges The Poverty In Life
God Arranges The Plenty In Life
God Arranges The Problems In Life
There are no accidents in a Christian’s life.
Romans 8:28 – And we know that that all things work together for
good to them that love God-

No. 2 – Paul Was Trusting In God’s Powerful Hand In His
Life
We can only trust Him, if we know that He is able to take care
of it.
Luke 1:37 – For with God nothing shall be impossible.

                                                                  4
Ephesians 3: 20 – He is able to do exceedingly above all that we
  ask or think.

  The Secret Of Prayer

B. The Secret Of Perception
The last aspect of Paul’s secret of being content was in what Paul
  thought about.
V.8 – Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever
things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things
are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of
good report; if there any virtue, and if there be any praise, think
  on these things.
Paul guarded what he thought about. He did not let Satan
attack his mind and get him to think about the bad things in life
or the negative things in life.
With all the BAD & NEGATIVE things in life, this is a difficult
task, but if we are going to have contentment in our life, it is a
must to discipline our thought life. Etc.

                                                                        5
