Dear Parents and Children

Christingle Service
We will be rounding this term off with our Christingle Service at Holy Trinity Church at 2.00pm – 2.30pm on Thursday 17th
December. All parents are very welcome to join us singing a number of traditional carols. There will be some seating but this will
be limited and it may well be standing room only. Please do make your way into the church and find space behind the chairs
rather than blocking the entrance way which must be kept clear as an emergency exit. Children form either nursery group are
most welcome to attend if parents are willing to take them as nursery staff will remain at school. If parents can help with
accompanying classes walking to church please let your child’s teacher know. Thank you.
At the end of the service parents are very welcome to take their children directly from the church, but please ensure you have
informed their teacher as remaining children will be returning to school with staff.

Mrs Thake
Mrs Thake our administrative assistant will be leaving on Thursday. She has gained a position working for the North Devon
Hospice and we all wish her the best of luck in her new job. She will be greatly missed, not only for her role in the office but as
a big part of our Friends of Ashleigh School Association where she has been a great help, attending discos, fetes and other fund
raising events. On behalf of the children, staff, governors and F.A.S.A. I would like to thank her for all her hard work.

Holiday in term time
Please ensure no holidays are booked this year during the first half term of the summer term, April 20th – May 28th or for the
first two weeks of the new academic year, 1st September – 15th September. Please ensure extended family is aware, should they
be the ones who arrange family holiday. Holiday requests will be unauthorised and followed up and fines made by the Education
Welfare Service. Requests made for other times of the year may be authorised if children’s attendance rates are over 96%.

Lost purse and phone
A small black purse and phone were lost by one of our parents at the children’s disco on Friday. The purse contains a credit card
and the phone has a lot of family photos which would be sadly missed. Some of our children believe it was picked up by an adu lt
but cannot remember who it was. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Christmas at Holy Trinity Church
Holy Trinity Church has recently been refurbished and extends a warm welcome to all its services over Christmas.
Services are as follows:-
Sunday 20 December 4.00pm Candle-lit Carol Service followed by refreshments.
Christmas Eve 11.30pm Midnight Communion – A mix of traditional carols and contemporary songs.
Christmas Day 10.30am Family Communion – A mix of traditional carols and contemporary songs for all ages.

Staff Toilets and Staff Room
A polite reminder that staff toilets should only really be used by adults, in case of being caught short or by nursery children
accompanied by adults on occasion. There has been a recent increase in regular use and I would remind parents that this is a
welfare provision for the staff and needs to be accessible to them.
We welcome the increasing number of volunteers who help out and/or carry out training within our school. We welcome these
people into our staff room as part of our team and confidentiality is discussed as part of induction. I would politely remind all
parents that use of the staffroom should be by arrangement and messages/information displayed there should be treated as

Our resident Holy Trinity Church activity club ‘Powerhouse’ will be meeting again on January 24th, 11.00 am at school. It is open
to all children from Ashleigh as long as children are accompanied by an adult. There are lots of fun activities to do and mak e
whilst adults can have a cup of tea/coffee and put the world to rights. This is a perfect opportunity to get out and do something
different, especially if the weather is grim and the kids are stuck inside.

Free Play and Language Course and Having Fun with Maths
This is a free 6 week course for parents of reception aged children organised by Mrs Byrne starting on Wednesday 13 th January
from 1.00pm – 3.00pm in our Community Room. If you would like to take part or want further details, please speak to Mrs Byrne
as soon as possible as places are limited.
Operation Christmas Child – Shoebox Appeal
Huge thanks to all the children and parents who supported this appeal. Mr Lewis and a number of children represented Ashleigh
by attending a special service at Holly Trinity Church to hand over the shoe boxes that will benefit many less fortunate children
this Christmas.

Activity Cards
A reminder to any families who receive free school meals, that you can receive an activity card allowing your child to take part
in a range of out of school activities free of charge or at a greatly reduced cost. The scheme also now allows a contribution
towards residential trips that children may take part in such as our Year 4 trip to The Mill Climbing Centre and Year 6 trip to
St George’s House. If you are eligible simply see our office staff to find out more.

Analogue watches
Should any parents be thinking of buying their child a watch for Christmas we would like to champion analogue ones? Children
are surrounded by digital displays on many electronic devices and many find telling the time using an analogue clock difficult.
If you can help this would be greatly appreciated.

After school club helpers
We are lucky to have a number of staff who volunteer their support to run an after school club at some stage of the year. In
future a number of additional ones may also be available by outside providers at a small charge. We have in the past also been
lucky to have a number of parents who have been happy to help staff in running these clubs. If you know of a club that happens
in school and would like to help out or have an idea for a club that would be new, please let the office staff know. We are k een
to provide as wide a range of opportunities for the children as possible and would be keen to support you.

North Devon Family Mediation Service
N.D.F.M. is a local charity based in Barnstaple which offers a cost effective, not for profit service, to help families or couples
who are separating, and can help with issues including children, finances and property. For a more detailed list of what they can
help with call 01271 321888, e mail ndfs@lineone.net or visit www.northdevonfamilymediation.co.uk.

And finally…
A reminder that the term ends this Thursday 17th December and the children are due back to school on Monday 4th January.
I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and have a peaceful time with your children. They have tried very hard in all their
learning this term and have done remarkably well this term in getting on with one another. I would like to thank all the teaching
and support staff for their enthusiasm and thank you to all the parents who have supported us in 2009. It was great to see how
many came to support both our Christmas performances and volunteered to help at our school discos. We raised a very
impressive £238.63 which will be donated to the Caroline Thorpe Children’s Ward at North Devon District Hospital. I wish you
all a very happy New Year and 2010.
