How to Save Files at the Library
Saving Files
Library customers can save information on library computers while they work. However, the files are
only stored temporarily. You must transfer your work to a floppy disk, a CD, or a flash drive. You can
also use your Web-based e-mail account and send yourself copies of your work as e-mail attachments.
Best Practices
While you work, save your work on the public drive: Local Disk (D:)--instructions below.
Save often!
The Library sells floppy disks and CDs. They each cost $1
Give yourself plenty of time to transfer your files from the (D:) to a floppy, CD, or flash
drive.
Be safe not sorry! Save your work to at least twice.
For example: Save your work to a floppy disk and send the file to yourself via e-mail
Save your work to a floppy disk and burn the file to a CD
Save your work on your flash drive and send the file to yourself via e-mail
Not all library workstations can save files to CDs. Ask a librarian or Computer lab
assistant to help you find a library workstation that can burn (save) files on a CD. See p.3
for more information.

Using CDs at the Library
Not all library workstations can save (or burn) files to a CD. Ask a librarian or Computer Lab
assistant to identify which workstations can burn files on CDs.
The steps for burning (saving) files to a CD may vary from library to library because the computer
equipment in each library was purchased and installed at different times.
The instructions below will work on most library workstations. Please ask a librarian or Computer
Lab assistant for assistance if you have any questions about how to burn a CD.
Burning Files to a CD
1. Save the file(s) you want to burn/write to a CD to the public drive: Local Disk (D:).
2. Close the file(s) that you want to burn/write to a CD.
3. Insert a CD-R or CD-RW into the drive. Wait a few seconds for the computer to recognize it (when
it stops moving).
4. From the Start menu, click Shortcut to Public (D) drive.
5. Click the file(s) you want to copy. To select more than one file, hold down the CTRL key while
clicking on each file.
6. Click File on the menu bar, and then choose Send To. Select CD drive (E:).
7. From the Start menu, click Shortcut to CD-ROM (E). You will see files ready to be written to the
CD, as well as any files currently on the CD. Note: New files written to the CD will replace any files
already on the CD that have the same file name. Rename the new file to avoid writing over an old
one with the same name.
8. Click File on the menu bar, and select Write these files to CD. The CD Writing Wizard will open.
This is also your chance to name your CD, if desired.
9. Click Next. The CD will eject when all of the files have been copied.
10. Click the Finish button in the CD Writing Wizard window.
11. Reinsert the disk in the CD drive. From the Start menu, click Shortcut to CD-ROM (E) to make
sure all of the files have been copied successfully.
E-mail Attachments
1. Login to your Web-based e-mail account.
2. Address an e-mail to yourself.
3. Attach your file to the e-mail. Send it.
4. Check to see that the e-mail has been received.
