Objective: Create an annual family budget using MS‐Excel
Before you begin: Imagine you are done with school, go online and find the following information using google.
1. Read this document completely before starting.
2. What the job or career you want pays per year. If hourly rate, multiply (hourly rate) * 40 * 52, for example if I
make $10/hour my annual earnings would be $10 * 40 * 52 = $20,800

3. Decide where you are going to live, use Google to figure out about how much monthly rent will be. If you are
going to split the rent with roommates, put your portion of the rent. If you can’t figure this out put $750/month
in your budget. Write your monthly rent here_$____________
4. Decide what car you want, new or used, and use Google to figure out an approximate amount. If you can’t
decide, put $300/month for a car payment. Put your monthly car payment here_$____________
Procedure:
1) Open Excel and save the worksheet as BUDGET in your Excel folder
2) Create a Title at the top called My Budget
3) Use Columns for months with a total at the end.
4) Use Rows for detailed items within the following sections.
5) Create a section for Totals (copy and paste link from the detail area)
a. Check here _____ when you know how to paste link
b. Make a row for the amount you save which is your total monthly earnings less your total monthly
expenses.
6) Create a section called Income
a. Have a row for Gross Income
i. Include Primary Income Source
ii. Interest/Dividends
iii. Other
b. Have a row for Net Income (take 0.75 of your Gross Income – most pay ~25% in taxes)
c. Have a row that shows the total income per month
7) Create a Section called Expenses
a. Rent/Mortgage
b. Utilities
i. electricity
ii. water
iii. natural gas
iv. trash
c. Car Payment
d. Gas for car
e. Other Loans (Student Loans, etc)
f. Groceries
g. Going out to eat
h. Cell Phone
i. Internet
j. Cable

k. Entertainment
l. Lawn/Gardening
m. Clothing
n. Supplies (personal, house)
o. Other, anything I might have missed that you can think of.
p. Row for the total expences for the month
8) Call this sheet Template, the rename another sheet as 2010. Then copy the contents of the template to the
worksheet you named 2010
9) Fill out the spreadsheet with the data you find, I will provide estimates. Make sure the cell formats are all set to
$.
10) Look at your overall budget and see if you are able to save anything per month. If you’re not, you need to make
sure you balance your budget so there is not any negative in your saving row.
11) Write what you have learned from this activity.
Note**Put a zero in the cell if you are not paying any category, but put the category in.
