HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES History of Art & Architecture Majors Architectural Studies Majors 1. SCHEDULE AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT EARLY! THESE BEGIN THE 2ND - 3RD WEEK OF EACH FALL AND SPRING SEMESTER!    If you are a new major, schedule an individual advising appointment with Gretchen Bender. (ghb1@pitt.edu) If you are a returning major, sign up for a group advising appointment by contacting Emily Schantz in the main HA&A office (room 104), (412) 6482400. At these meetings, you will be given a signed registration form which you will need to complete on your own (see below). 2. CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT TO MAKE SURE THAT NO HOLDS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON IT FROM STUDENT ACCOUNTS OR UNIVERSITY COLLECTIONS THAT WOULD BLOCK YOUR REGISTRATION.  To do this, go to my.pitt.edu 3. CHECK TWO WEBSITES TO SEE WHEN THE COURSE SCHEDULE FOR THE UPCOMING SEMESTER WILL BE POSTED:  www.as.pitt.edu: then click on “Course Descriptions.” At this site, you can search for a class by department, by General Education Requirement, or by instructor and/or title of class. This is where you can also access the detailed course description for every class offered at the university. my.pitt.edu: click on “View Schedule of Classes.” This site gives you realtime status for a class. (It will tell you whether a class is full/closed.) You can search on this site for open classes only by clicking on the “open classes only” box.  4. COMPLETE YOUR REGISTRATION FORM:  Using the above websites, fill out the registration form that you were given at your advising appointment. o Include the 5-digit CRN (course number) that identifies each particular section for which you want to register. Also give us the department name and department course number (i.e. HAA 0010). List the days and times for each class that you want to take. o Fill in the alternates section of your registration form. If you provide us with your second choices, we are more likely to get you into a full schedule of classes on the first try. Your form should have your Peoplesoft ID number (NOT your SS#).     Your form should indicate whether you are an HA&A or an Architectural Studies major (these forms are processed separately.) Your form should include contact information on it – a cell phone or an email address – so that we can contact you immediately if we are able to get you into all the classes you wanted. Sign your form! 5. ACQUIRE SPECIAL PERMISSION FORMS FROM OTHER DEPARTMENTS FOR RESTRICTED CLASSES THAT YOU WISH TO TAKE.  If you wish to take a class in another department that is listed on the www.as.pitt.edu “Course Description” website as restricted, we can not enroll you in the class without a signed copy of the “Special Permission to Enter a Closed/Restricted Class” form from this department. A note on Studio Arts classes: some seats in foundation classes are saved for architectural studies majors, but once these are full, all remaining seats are reserved for their majors. You must wait until all their majors have registered before Studio Arts opens up their remaining seats to other students. All 1000-level Studio Arts classes are restricted outright for their majors. Several of our classes also are restricted to majors (i.e. HA&A 1010, HA&A 1913, etc.) If you are one of our majors and we are processing your registration form, you do not need to get a special permission form for these classes.   6. TURN YOUR FORM IN TO THE MAIN HA&A OFFICE FOR PROCESSING     Bring your form to the main HA&A office (room 104) and give it to Emily Schantz IMPORTANT!!!: Students begin turning their registration forms in to the office AS SOON AS the course schedule is posted!!! Registration forms are processed on a first come-first serve basis, so it’s crucial that you turn your form in as early as possible (usually 1 – 2 weeks before the start of registration.) Students who will have earned at least 84 credits by the end of the current semester are eligible to register ahead of time as seniors. (Senior registration always begins on a Thursday, with general registration opening up on the following Monday.) A NOTE ON ADD/DROP PROCEDURES:  We will work with you to ensure that you receive a schedule for the upcoming semester that is full-time (at least 12 credits).  However, routine add/drop requests beyond this will need to be processed at the main registrar’s office in Thackeray. You can fill out an add/drop form at Thackeray. It does not require a departmental signature.
