Accounting/Finance/ Personal Financial Planning
program
Accounting, finance, and personal financial planning are three of the options available to students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Science in business administration. During the first two years of the program students concentrate on a broad liberal arts curriculum as well as courses in accounting, economics, and computer science. During the final two years, students complete the required courses in the option along with courses in management, marketing, information systems, operation management and communication.
accounting
The accounting option provides the foundation for careers in accounting. The undergraduate degree is the first phase of an integrated program leading to an MBA with an accounting emphasis. The undergraduate option prepares students for many entrylevel positions in the accounting area while the graduate program complies with South Carolina’s 150-semesterhour requirement to sit for the CPA exam. Following completion of general education requirements, students take a challenging curriculum of core business courses, finishing with indepth classes such as intermediate accounting, individual and corporate tax, auditing, and accounting information systems.
finance
All businesses are affected directly or indirectly through the influence of money and capital markets, taxes, inflation, interest rates, and government policies. Furthermore, businesses must understand the importance of effective investment and wise generation of short-term and capital funding. The financial management option prepares students to understand both the external and internal relationships and how financial decisions impact the value of an organization. Courses in the finance option include intermediate and advanced financial management, investment management, and international finance.
personal financial planning
The objective of the personal financial planning option is to cultivate a learning-centered program that qualifies students to take the CFP® Certification Examination and prepares them to assume positions in large financial planning firms. Financial institutions, especially banks, mutual fund organizations, insurance companies, and independent financial planning firms recruit students who are prepared to take the CFP® Certification Examination. Courses in the option include estate planning, center, a student resource room with tutoring services, a student services center, and presentation seminar room. introduction to tax, fundamentals of insurance, and employee benefits and retirement planning. Students are strongly encouraged to take a comprehensive review course prior to taking the CFP® Certification Examination.

The baccalaureate degree program in business administration is accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Did you know? Beginning in 2005, the business administration degree will offer a new option in personal financial planning. This option will prepare students to take the CFP® Certification Examination upon graduation.
Business
faculty
The business administration faculty at Winthrop is highly dedicated to teaching. A high level of knowledge of their specialty areas, combined with “real world” experience serves to benefit their students. Members of the faculty have won Winthrop’s Distinguished Professor, Outstanding Junior Professor, and Excellence in Teaching Awards. They are also involved in active research, participate in a variety of professional activities, and volunteer in the Rock Hill community. Business administration majors are provided multiple networking opportunities with their professors and the business community. This enables students to establish the contacts that they will need for advanced study and employment.
internships/co-ops
Internships and cooperative education opportunities are available in accounting and finance and often serve as stepping stones to employment and entry into professional careers. Internships are not required but are encouraged and may count for academic credit in the option. Positions are available at a variety of institutions and corporations in Rock Hill and the metropolitan-Charlotte area.
groups/professional organizations
Students have many opportunities to participate in student organizations and develop their leadership skills. The College of Business Administration sponsors a CBA Club which is open to all interested students. Students manage the club under the guidance of faculty, inviting outside speakers from various business fields and arranging trips to observe the activities of appropriate businesses, government agencies, and investment firms. Top academic students may be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the national scholastic honorary society for students in business administration. Highachieving students in accounting and finance are also eligible for membership in Beta Alpha Psi, the national honors fraternity for financial information professionals. In addition, there is a very active chapter of NABA, the National Association for Black Accountants, on campus.
careers/graduate school
Accounting graduates enter professions such as corporate treasurers, budget directors, public accountants, internal auditors, cost accountants, financial analysts, income tax practitioners, governmental accountants, comptrollers, and internal revenue agents. Finance graduates pursue careers as corporate finance managers, financial analysts, stock and securities brokers, budget directors, credit managers, bank officers, and directors of finance.
