How to Login, Post Replies and Update Profile on the SHF/Two-Dogs Message Board Updated 11/13/2008 – John Lortz (jlortz@shf.org) & Susan Leavitt (sleavitt@shf.org) How to Login The next time you go to the message board you may need to log in. To do this, click on the Login link as show n in the scree n shot below . You will then be asked to enter your Login Name and Password as shown in this screen shot.  Enter your Login Name and Password and click the Login button. Notice the Remember Me: check box. If you are working on a lab computer you want to be sure this is unchecked so that you will automatical ly log out when you close a session. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are using a server computer that is running the Unix Operating System. Unix is a case sensitive operating system. Meaning that is will see sleavitt and Sleavitt at two different people so you must watch capitalization. How to Use the SHF / Two-Dogs Message Board Page 1 After you login your login name will appear on the page as shown on the screen shot on the next page. If you are using your own computer and don’t click the log out link, also shown on the next page, when you are finished, you will automatically be logged in the next time you come to the message board even if you restart the computer. However, if you are using a lab computer and forget to log out, if some else uses that computer to post a reply they could be replying as you. The Remember Me: checkbox on the login screen on the previous page will has been added as a new feature to prevent this from happening. Make sure the check box is cleared so that you are logged out after each session if you are working on a lab computer. Reading Messages The Two-Dogs Board is organized into different area. At the time of this writing, there are two areas:  BIS 101 Introduction to Computer - Fall 2006  BIS 220 Advanced Business Applications – Fall 2006 The College of Saint Mary student areas will be named with the Course Number and Semester and Year. Your name will be here after you log in. Be sure to click the log out link when you are finished. How to Use the SHF / Two-Dogs Message Board Page 2 As shown in this screen shot, click on the BIS 101 and BIS 104 - Fall 2005, or the BIS220 Fall 2005 title, depending upon the class you are in. These two areas, pointed out, tell you what page you are on. Notice we started on the Two-Dogs/SHF Message Board page  and we are currently on the BIS 101 and BIS 104 Fall 2004 class page. First Topic for your class On the new page that appears, you will see a list of various topics for your class. Click on the link for 01 – Introductions and What Do You Hope to Learn About Computers? This is the first topic page. The first posting will be posted by an instructor and will be a description of the topic you will discuss with other students. Read through the description and the directions and think about what you want to post to this discussion. How to Use the SHF / Two-Dogs Message Board Page 5 Posted Reply Original posting Above each message posted, you will see five icons. The last two buttons are probably the ones you will use the most. You can only use the Edit button on your own postings, however, when you click the Edit button you will be allowed to edit your own message such as correcting spelling or grammar errors. Replying to What Someone has posted. After you have posted your thoughts on the topic, read through what other students have posted to the topic. You are then to reply to two other student’s postings. The quote button will allow you to put a message in quotes in a reply to someone. Click the quote button above the posting you wish to reply to and a Post Reply page will appear. Click the mouse in front of the [QUOTE] and press the Enter key. Then begin to type your reply above the quote. You can select a Message Icon and also include Instant Graemlins just like when you posted your response to the topic. When you are finished, click the Add Reply button. How to Use the SHF / Two-Dogs Message Board Page 6 Quick Response Something new has been added to the bottom of the topic page, the Quick Reply area. You can use this to quickly post your response to the topic rather than clicking the Post Reply button. How to Use the SHF / Two-Dogs Message Board Page 7 If you cannot find your posting, it may be on another page. After there are so many postings, the message board software will automatically create another page. Notice the Next link as pointed out in the screen shot. Clicking on this will take you to the next page of postings. How to Update Your Profile On most of the pages in the Two-Dogs Message Board area, you will find a link at the top labeled my profile.
