HOW TO SET UP BASE STATION 1. Make sure you have: -Base Station -2 Cables (battery and coax) -Battery -Tripod -Base notebook with log sheet and field data sheet 2. Find base location from GPS field data sheet or 3001 Base Log . 3. Locate proper marker (with actual stamp). Schlep equipment there. 4. Fill out Base Station Log Sheet (note: Julian date is the day number for this year. There is a chart on the first page of the Base notebook). 5. Set tripod: -Pull center post out to 2.0, peg and tighten. -Set post on marker. -Turn post so that adjustable legs “bracket” North. -Loosen black handled bolts on adjustable legs and shorten them to remove from holes, then lengthen all the way. (Your back is to the North) -Squeeze handles and extend adjustable legs equally. -Set adjustable legs equidistant from post with bubble close to center. (Squeezing handles, push each leg into the ground with your foot.). 6. Hook up Base Station: -Screw antenna on to top of tripod. -Attach coax cable from base station to antenna. -Attach battery cable to battery, then to base station. Cover battery. -Turn base station on (ON/OFF button). 7. Level Tripod: -Loosen black handled bolt on third leg and shorten lower portion to remove from hole, then lengthen lower leg all the way. -Loosen brass bolt, extend leg, plant tip equidistant from other legs. -Standing between the two adj. legs, squeeze both handles, adjust so that the bubble is centered. (Push towards the bubble). -Tighten brass bolt on third leg.
8. Check Status: -Press “Status” button on the keyboard, then from the menu select “General” and then select “Memory/Battery” to check levels in PC Card and batteries.
9. Set up Base Station: -Check base station: GPS>7, L1>5, L2>5. -“Configure”, enter, “530_530_BASE”, enter -“Job”, “new” (F2) -Next to “name” write first four letters of station plus Julian Date (ex: “avon117”). -Under “Description” put stamp name. -You don’t have to fill out creator (can initial). -Hit “cont.” (F1) -“Survey” on main menu, “cont” (F1), “here” (F3?) -Next to “pid” enter point identification as determined by the client, with suffix to denote flight of the day you are doing. (i.e.: a/b). -Hit “Store” (F1) -Fill in “antenna height” with 2.0(m), enter, cont. (F1) -Watch that the crooked arrow is moving and that the station is counting up. (Lower right on screen) -Enter Start time (Zulu) on log sheet. -Lock the keyboard (alt-l.) 10. Close Base station as securely as possible so as not to allow access to critters.
