JUST UP FOR THE NIGHT …
Golfers from Lincoln, Isabel Moore, Cecilia Glen, Fay Wilcock, Mary Adams and sitting, Maureen Jones Vyv Weller and Denise Potter from Alexandra A four-hour car trip up to Timaru to make Wednesday’s Cross Country event for work-mates Denise Potter and Vyv Weller took a little longer than expected … half an hour into the journey they had to go back for Vyv’s registration form! Working at the same medical centre in Alexandra (receptionist and nurse), Denise has this week just updated her CPR skills. “Competing in the 7K run, I hoped I wouldn’t have to use them,” she joked. Bob Thomas, and caddy his wife Yvonne, are of course the parents of Masters Games manager, Chris. You might have seen them handing out the Slim (Lin) Green (Temuka), Cecil Kircher (St Andrews), Merv Morris (Lincoln), and Bob Thomas (Blenheim) team up for the first day of their individual 2-day championship yesterday It’s pretty competitive for Bob and Joyce on the field, but there’s always a hug at the end. It was the singles Croquet yesterday, the doubles today. Bob’s wife Esme (Joyce’s sister) is their main supporter. And by the way, Croquet originated from England … used to be played on the Tennis courts. Player, Liz Ballentyne tells me the Aorangi Croquet
EACH FOR THEIR OWN
Bob Turnbull (Timaru) has a hug for his sister-in-law Joyce Johnston (Oamaru) at the end of yesterday’s croquet. Club has 60 members – aged from 17 to late 80’s. And you can’t get away with anything at the croquet ... the editor heard that players drinks were being drug tested ...
IIS S’AMUSENT À PETANQUE
Ooooh la la! Di Di and Gi Gi with Robbie Sihaumau On Wednesday afternoon the Editor caught up with the “French Girls” at the Town and Country’s Petanque terrain. A Timaru team of Gi Gi (Coral Taylor), Di Di (Vicki Healy), Mi Mi (Allison Kruishoop) and Fi Fi (Sonya Goodall). Regular Petanque players they played in the Christchurch SI Masters last year … and in these masters Sonya picked up a golf in the power walking and sister coral a silver in the Twilight 400. Now a little about Petanque (originating from France in 1907 or 1910): According to Google, the name Petanque means ‘feet together on the ground’. It’s the only game of bowls that is practiced in a squatting position and it is by far the most practiced game of bowls on earth undoubtedly because of the simplicity of its rules. Bon sur vous les filles!
Masters Bar Manager, Vaughan O’Shannassey in the bin of empties “There’s more team sports during the weekend, such as Touch, Indoor Soccer, Indoor Netball and Basketball, and yes it should get busy.” And has everybody been behaving? “Absolutely, we’ve had no problems at all … it’s been a great party atmosphere.” That’s what we like to hear! Timaru man, Brian Armstrong gave up fulltime work last year to do what he loves … Sport and Therapeutic Massage. Yesterday I caught up with him as he eased the aches and pains of Chris Thomas from his temporary massage workroom in the Masters Village. “I’d ideally like to do just sports people, but Timaru’s not big enough for that.” He says he does whatever ‘it takes’ to fix troubled spots, and believes with massage, you either have what it takes, or not. Everybody’s the same underneath! “A lot of people’s problems are because their body is not aligned, and there’s also bad posture, a stressful life and people not taking care of themselves.” A successful weightlifter himself, Brian recently accompanied the New Zealand team at the World Powerlifting Championships, in a capacity as Coach
Games Masseuse, Brian Armstrong relieves the stress of Games Manager, Chris Thomas and Masseuse, and he also finds time for his other love … doing DJ work at weddings, discos and functions. He can be reached for an appointment on 027 4508330, charges $30/half hour or $50/hour.
HE’S GOT THE TOUCH
‘The Poplars’ staff members in action, co-owner Vicky, Morgan, Laura, Melanie and Alice. Operating in the Bay Hall right up until Sunday night … see the fabulous food and friendly staff. Catch up with Golf Croquet (doubles), Fresh Water Fishing, Golf, Hockey, Indoor Bowls (pairs), Petanque, and later in the afternoon Cycling, Basketball, Squash and Swimming See you at the Caroline Bay Hall from 6 to 7.30pm with our talented local young performers, then from 8pm our popular Bavarian Night returns Don’t miss this games favourite!
It’s confirmed … this year at the Masters they’ve been partying harder than ever before! Bar Manager Vaughan O’Shaughnessy told the Editor he’d had to replenish the fridge many times over … even in the first weekend, and that hasn’t happened before. Although he says these Games have been quieter during the week. With an influx of competitors expected as we move into the weekend, he expects another big one.
THIS YEAR THEY ARE PARTYING HARDER!
